Thrilled to be speaking during the Larta Institute's ECO '24 Heal.LA Demo Day on Dec 10 in Los Angeles at the "Bridging the Capital Gaps in Healthcare Innovation Panel" alongside moderator, Stephanie Hsieh, CEO BioscienceLA, Jhaimy Fernandez, MD, Associate Medical Director AltaMed Health Services with opening remarks by Rashmi Shetgiri, CSO Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. To learn more and register, visit: https://lnkd.in/g_htW6tQ Special thanks to Carlos Gutierrez for the invite and Cynthia West, Ph.D. for the connection to Carlos and Larta. Excitingly, since my recent appointment at the Mentor Program Manager for Chapman University's Leatherby Center for Entrepreneurship and Business Ethics, my calendar has quickly filled up with nearly 100 Zoom meetings with a dedicated mentor base who are helping to support young Orange County entrepreneurs. Notably, the Leatherby Center is the only California Office of the Small Business Advocate (CalOSBA)’s Accelerate California Inclusive Innovation Hub in Orange County, California with the mission of facilitating economic empowerment opportunities for underserved communities. I'm also happy to expand global thought leadership and the Amplifying Scientific Innovation? ecosystem via podcasting features on: - Prophets of AI - BioTalk Unzipped - Greater Irvine Chamber's Business Insights?podcast I’m looking forward to sharing insights from my journey as showcased in the Amplifying Scientific Innovation? book series, in addition to insights from The 65 featured leaders on the Amplifying Scientific Innovation? Video Podcast, including the latest discussion with Sophia The Robot, and previous panel discussions on clinical trial diversity. I’m also grateful that my small business, The Sophia Consulting Firm, has received an exclusive opportunity geared toward emerging Black-owned businesses to receive technical assistance and business coaching from the Black Cooperative Impact Fund. There are also pending opportunities during JPMorganChase Healthcare Conference to support organizations like Blinkpad and Aquillius. I also remain grateful for the opportunity to support Biopharma Leaders of Color (BLOC)'s student poster session. 2025 is promising and despite many unexpected challenges in 2024, resilience pays off and I'm grateful for the ever-growing number of people worldwide who continue to support my personal and professional evolution. "We need to invest in innovation, the investment is in our future", said Ted W. Love, MD four years ago during one of the first episodes of the Amplifying Scientific Innovation? Video Podcast. Remarkably, Dr. Love and his family pledged a $5 million endowment to the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine earlier this month to enhance the center’s impact in vital initiatives focused on helping individuals with sickle cell disease live healthier lives with fewer disease-related complications. Growing up in Nigeria, sickle cell disease (SCD) was considered a death sentence. Decades later, it was certainly a full circle moment to hear an American physician and world-renowned SCD champion reflect on a similar outlook on SCD from his experiences growing up in the United States: “When I was a kid growing up, sickle cell patients often did not see their 20th birthday. And we made some improvements that extended survival, typically into the 40s, which is not very good either.” At the time, Ted was the President & CEO?at Global Blood Therapeutics (GBT), now a wholly owned subsidiary of Pfizer Inc. As I shared in my new book, Amplifying Scientific Innovation, the parallels?between our generational?and cultural?perception of sickle cell disease as a death sentence remains one of the most palpable connections for me to date because it showcases the transformative?power?of scientific innovations. While rare in developed markets, SCD is a group of inherited red blood cell (RBC)?disorders that affects approximately 100,000 Americans, many of whom are African American, and more than 20 million people worldwide according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. SCD complications begin in early childhood and are typically associated with shortened life expectancy, pain and other serious complications such as acute chest syndrome. Patient management focuses on pain alleviation, blood transfusions, and, in a few cases, bone marrow transplants in younger patients. It’s reassuring to see increased investments and interest in a global disease such as SCD. There is a plethora of unmet medical needs?that remain today, particularly for minority populations; many are hard-to-treat complex genetic?disorders such as SCD. Innovation is timeless and it's been illuminating to share 8-minute clips of previous podcast episodes that remain relevant and resourceful even today. To learn more about Ted's personal anecdotes on his leadership journey, views on health disparities in SCD and other diseases that affect underrepresented populations, and his outlook on innovation in the life science industry, please visit The Sophia Consulting Firm's website for the full video, transcript, and other resources: https://lnkd.in/gfBtmdH6 #AmplifyingScientificInnovation #healthequity #healthdisparities #minorityhealth #sicklecelldisease #clinicalresearch #geneticdisorders #philanthropy #diseaseawareness

Clinical Trial Diversity is essential for sustaining scientific innovations by optimizing safety and efficacy of new medicines for all patients. It's been almost four years since I moderated a special panel edition of the Amplifying Scientific Innovation Video Podcast that focused on innovative approaches for optimizing clinical trial diversity. To maximize engagement, this panel discussion aired during the JPMorganChase Healthcare Conference, the largest and most informative healthcare investment symposium in the industry. I'm excited to return again in 2025 in partnership with Biopharma Leaders of Color (BLOC) and Black Women in Science and Engineering (BWISE) to continue to advance conversations on STEM diversity and health equity. Notably, cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S and a major cause of death worldwide. Yet, despite poorer survival rates and higher mortality rates for African Americans relative to White Americans, SWOG Cancer Research Network studies have demonstrated that less than one in four of pharmaceutical company sponsored trials are African American cancer patients. I remain grateful for the senior leaders, highlighted below, who provided valuable insights on clinical trial diversity and innovative methods for maximizing patient recruitment and engagement through approaches such as virtual clinical trials. ? Bert Bruce, President, North America, Rare Disease at Pfizer, one of the world's premier biopharmaceutical companies. #raredisease #sciencewillwin ? Dr. Gary Puckrein, President and CEO of the National Minority Quality Forum, a not-for-profit organization that he founded in 1998 with the goal of strengthening the capacity of local communities to eliminate the disproportionate burden of premature death and preventable illness in minority populations. It was an honor to be recognized by the NMQF as a 40 under 40 Minority Health Leader in 2023. #40under40 #healthequity ? Craig Lipset is an Advisor and Founder of Clinical Innovation Partners and former Head of Clinical Innovation at Pfizer. #clinicaltrialdiversity #decentralizedtrials ? Janet Lynch Lambert is the CEO of the Alliance for Regenerative Medicine, the leading international advocacy organization dedicated to regenerative medicines and advanced therapies. #regenerativemedicine #advocacy ? Dr. Mimi Huizinga, MD MPH was the VP and Head, US Oncology Medical at Novartis Oncology, and now VP, Oncology Medical Affairs Lung Cancer at AstraZeneca For full transcript and to learn more about The Sophia Consulting Firm's Amplifying Scientific Innovation platform, please visit: https://lnkd.in/gVp2bnBY
