Important to note: ACRA also has heard questions about whether the rescinding of CEQ’s NEPA regulations portends similar efforts to revoke the AHCP’s 800 regulations. However, there is a major difference between the two: Congress specifically gave the ACHP the authority to issue regulations; Congress never explicitly bestowed that authority to CEQ regarding NEPA. Therefore, the court’s decision last fall finding that CEQ lacks the statutory authority to issue regulations for NEPA does not apply to the ACHP’s Section 106 regulations.

Register now for the 2025 SCA Annual Conference! The theme this year is "Relevancy: Considering Connections Through Archaeology". Let us convene at our 2025 Annual Meeting to showcase our successes?in how we study, understand, interpret, and conserve the archaeological record to inform future?science and society. Let’s also take time to assess how to adapt and improve efforts for future?archaeology in the betterment of the discipline, our world, and the SCA. Formal presentations,?poster sessions, workshops, panel sessions, and lively discussion using this theme will help us?work collaboratively to increase public appreciation and support for archaeology in California.

As many of you know, I am one of the Principals at the Alta Heritage Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that recovers human cremains from catastrophic fire events. Cremains are the ashes of loved ones that are stored at home. We are deploying to the Southern California fires in two weeks. We are coordinating with CalOES and they are working with us to notify property owners of our services. The response here will be unprecedented and I need some help. We need four things: 1) Volunteers—specifically, those local to Southern California that can commute to help with the cremains recoveries; 2) Tyvek – we are going to need hundreds of Tyvek suits to supply both archaeologists and dog handlers; 3) Institutional support-- this could be GPS equipment, supplies, supporting staff financially to volunteer, food, and lodging; and 4) Financial support—we will need to pay for lodging, food, mileage, and equipment. We run entirely on donations, there’s no overhead or wages, 100% of all funds go directly into field support. Please help if you can, we’re going to have to move quickly.
