Veronica Learmonth, the Director of Construction Operations at TSO, marked her 30th work anniversary last month—a milestone that even she finds surprising, given she started her career in a completely different industry. Originally planning to continue her career as a paralegal when she moved from Texas to California, Veronica hit a roadblock when she realized she needed a specific certification to work in the state. Without missing a beat, she pivoted and landed a job at a construction company, which unfortunately closed its doors. By this point, Veronica was interested in the construction business so she began looking for another role in the field. “I was reading the newspaper looking for work one day and saw a full-page ad from Sobrato looking for help,” explains Veronica. She responded to the ad, was immediately invited to interview, and it turned out to be a perfect match! Veronica's journey at TSO kicked off in an administrative role, and as the company grew, so did her career. Now the Director of Construction Operations, she stands out as one of the few women in construction to reach such heights. In fact, The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that only 10.9% of the construction workforce is female. "I grew because I showed genuine interest," she emphasizes. Veronica attributes her success in a male-dominated field to being a good listener and a go-getter. Additionally, she has a support network of female colleagues in the industry to lean on. Veronica expressed excitement about the positive changes unfolding in the construction industry, saying, "I'm spotting women everywhere in the field—swinging hammers, making things happen behind the scenes. It's fantastic!" She passionately encourages more women to explore the construction sector, emphasizing the abundant opportunities and roles that need to be filled. “There is so much opportunity, women just need to take the chance like I did.” #womenshistorymonth #womeninrealestate #realestatedevelopment #womeninconstruction
