One in five Americans (20%) are women of color, and it is projected that women of color will be the majority of all U.S. women in America by 2060. Yet only 4% of executive-level leaders are currently women of color. Founded in 2020 by Felicia Smith, S.O.A.R. Coaching LLC is not your typical firm. S.O.A.R. (Surmounting Obstacles And Reigning) focuses specifically on helping women of color achieve their professional goals. A 2022 McKinsey/LeanIn study notes that in the wake of the “Great Resignation” we are seeing the “Great Breakup,” where a record 10.5% of women left their organizations due to “the broken rung”—a lack of opportunity for upward mobility in their careers. While these barriers exist for all women in disproportionate numbers compared to men, the study found that Asian and Black women say they're less likely to have strong team allies and Black women leaders are 1.5 times more likely to have colleagues question their judgment or imply they're unqualified for their jobs. Through individual coaching as well as programs designed for newer leaders and emerging executives, the mission of S.O.A.R. Coaching is to help not only put women of color on the track for leadership, but to prepare them how to be effective and impactful leaders.
