The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, a nonprofit independent research institute, is located in Pacific Heights in San Francisco. Dedicated to research on human vision, it was founded to encourage a productive collaboration between the medical clinic and the scientific laboratory. Smith-Kettlewell conducts research on many different topics, but its main interests are: * Clinical studies which relate directly to the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and disorders. * The development of devices and vocational programs to aid the partially sighted, blind and hearing impaired - the major focus of the Rehabilitation Engineering and Research Center (RERC). * Basic research to understand how the eye and brain work, providing a fundamental background for both the clinical and rehabilitation programs.

Yesterday, our lab was among the contingent from The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute attending University of California, Berkeley - Vision Science's Bay Area Vision Research Day. Pushpita Bhattacharyya and Ryan Tam presented some early results on optimizing signal properties for assisted echolocation —?wearable sonar to aid perception by blind travelers —?continuing a line of research that began at Cal a decade ago. TLDR: The more you slow echoes, the easier it is to distinguish objects that made those echoes, buoying the promise of assistive technology that leverages customizable user interfaces. Grateful that perception in the absence of vision found a welcoming and engaged venue in #BAVRD!

A bit late, but the International Multisensory Research Forum last week was a real joy to attend in Reno! It’s always fun to hear about research projects from a variety of lab groups, but the multisensory nature of this conference means a real diversity of projects and interests above and beyond many other conferences. I was privileged enough to be selected by conference organizers to present work out of Natela Shanidze's lab at The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute discussing how noise exposure leads to vestibular deficit and possible changes in visual dependence.
