Brandon Biggs, a scientist at the?Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, delivered a groundbreaking presentation titled?“Can You Read This Map: Checking Maps for ADA Accessibility”?as part of the?ADA National Network’swebinar series on March 14, 2024. Biggs emphasized that this talk is now the?definitive government source?for ensuring digital maps comply with the?Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). ? His presentation provided a comprehensive guide to making digital maps accessible to people with disabilities, covering key challenges and best practices. Biggs, the inventor of?Audiom, a tool for creating accessible maps, has been at the forefront of developing solutions for non-visual map access. ? With digital maps playing an increasing role in navigation and public services, Biggs’ work sets a new benchmark for accessibility standards. His insights will serve as a critical resource for government agencies, developers, and advocates working to make geographic information?genuinely?inclusive. ? The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, a nonprofit independent research institute, is located in Pacific Heights in San Francisco. Dedicated to research on human vision, it was founded to encourage a productive collaboration between the medical clinic and the scientific laboratory. Smith-Kettlewell conducts research on many different topics, but its main interests are: * Clinical studies which relate directly to the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and disorders. * The development of devices and vocational programs to aid the partially sighted, blind and hearing impaired - the major focus of the Rehabilitation Engineering and Research Center (RERC). * Basic research to understand how the eye and brain work, providing a fundamental background for both the clinical and rehabilitation programs.

Hear my most recent podcast talking with Brendan Aylward about how it is completely possible to make geographic maps fully accessible to anyone. Disabled and illiterate users can have fully accessible geographic maps, and they are required to have fully accessible geographic maps. Please share the message with everyone you know, that maps can be inclusive! #Map #GIS #Inclusive #WCAG #A11Y #Accessibility #Cartography #Blind #WeAreBillionStrong
Working to make fitness accessible ? Owner of Unified Health and Performance and Executive Director of AdaptX
In episode 75 of the AdaptX Podcast with Brandon Biggs, I had the privilege of learning about how digital maps and navigation can become more accessible. It's a relevant topic to our work as we scale our Unified 5k series and want to be ensure that our course and event maps are accessible to all users. Brandon is the CEO and co-founder of XR Navigation and developer of Audiom, an inclusive digital map viewer. Visit https://xrnavigation.io/ to learn more and connect with Brandon here on LinkedIn or through the inquiry form on their website if you're interested in improving the accessibility of your digital footprint.
