Today, the SHINE Collab convened a one of its kind workshop in Harare-Zimbabwe, bringing together 20 leaders from across different sectors including economic development, climate justice, decentralised energy and gender justice-women’s rights. Our goal was to reimagine and map what a just energy transition would look like if we really took justice seriously to ensure that the just transition is transformational.?? ? ?? Some takeaways:?? ?? If the process of the energy transition is not just and inclusive, the outcome will never be. That means democratising voices, perspectives, knowledge and rights. The just transition must address energy poverty which affects the majority of Zimbabweans.?? ?? Access to clean energy for electricity should be a right. It’s essential to function in a digitised world.? ?? We must disrupt the common belief that energy access is an individual consumer issue and reclaim it as a question of citizen participation.?? ?? To enable everyone to participate in making the energy transition just, people need more information about what’s involved, popularised and accessible in local languages.??? ?? Part of the solution is support for innovations by local private renewable energy companies committed to serving and knowing the needs of communities, especially rural communities.?? ?? We recognized that the transition demands much more collaboration and discussion across the many different sectors, and committed ourselves to building bridges and knowledge sharing.???
