We focus on three pathways to greater racial equity and economic inclusion: People??????????, Place???, and Power?? In our 2024 Annual Report, we share a story of impact of Place Pathway grantee The Unity Council who successfully advocated to establish Oakland’s first Latinx Cultural Arts District to celebrate and preserve the richness of the Fruitvale neighborhood and Oakland’s Latinx business owners, artists, and community-based organizations. Our Place Pathway is all in on housing because stable and affordable homes and strong neighborhoods are essential to creating a diverse, vibrant, and thriving Bay Area. We advocate at all levels to keep people in their homes, support thriving neighborhoods, and preserve trusted local organizations. The more you know about Alameda County | Native American Heritage Month Edition In 1901, 425 ceremonial burial grounds, the final resting place of thousands of Ohlone people, were documented in the region. These shellmounds, some as tall as 60 feet and made of layers of shell, human remains and other materials, hold tremendous spiritual and religious meaning to contemporary Ohlone. One of the region’s largest shellmounds is located in Emeryville. Covered first by an amusement park and then a factory, the shellmound was excavated in sections in the early 20th century. Ultimately, in the 1990s, a development agency purchased the land containing its remains to build the Bay Street Mall. Despite community advocacy to preserve and recognize the shellmound site, Emeryville’s leaders voted against preservation. Instead, they arrived at what they considered a viable alternative: building a memorial. This representation, inauthentic in appearance and location, now sits beside the Bay Street Mall. In 2016, Blake Griggs Properties proposed the construction of a massive condominium retail complex on this spot, a project which would undoubtedly unearth Ohlone burials and artifacts and desecrate the site. In response, Indian People Organizing for Change, the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust and their supporters successfully campaigned to have the spot listed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as an endangered historic place. We focus on three pathways to greater racial equity and economic inclusion: People??????????, Place???, and Power??. In our 2024 Annual Report, we share a story of impact of People Pathway grantee EBASE, who in 2018 passed a ballot measure providing additional protections for hospitality workers and created the Dept. of Workplace & Employment Standards. Our People Pathway prioritizes making it easier for people to thrive and prosper. We focus on ending unfair fines and fees, reimagining public safety by addressing the root causes of harm and violence, building the power of essential workers, and supporting cooperative models that advance a sustainable economy. The more you know about the Bay | Native American Heritage Month edition The region known as the Bay Area is occupied and unceded Ohlone Land. The First Nations Ohlone people of the land are Chochenyo, Lisjan, Karkin in the East Bay, the Ramaytush in San Francisco, the Yokuts in South Bay and Central Valley, and the Muwekma tribe through the region. Other Indigenous groups include the Graton Rancheria community (Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo), Kashaya, Patwin and Mishewal Wappo in the North Bay, and the Bay Miwok and Tamien in the East Bay. European and Spanish colonization, genocidal practices and current-day systemic oppression have created and continue to create challenges to Native sovereignty. Land acknowledgment is only a small part of the liberation work necessary to unlearn colonizer thinking and behaviors and stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities. Experience a history of social and political change as it has occurred in our neighborhoods and communities through our Mapping Change virtual tour. #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth https://ow.ly/wlvf50Uai7r
