In partnership with Wine & Spirit Education Trust we are offering scholarships funding WSET Levels 1 and 2 Awards in Spirits, tutoring services, and beverages. If awarded, the scholarship is a one year commitment to The Roots Fund and your study program, you also will be appointed a mentor for additional support. This is an amazing opportunity for any scholar interested in expanding their knowledge and career into the spirits world. “The decision to expand The Roots Fund work into the spirits industry hones back into our overall mission to create economic opportunity for communities of color in beverages,” stated by CEO Ikimi Dubose-Woodson. “Spirits brands have always heavily marketed and spoken to our communities, yet the labor and executive leadership still make up less than 8% of the spirits industry. This Womens History Month we continue to highlight monumental women within the industry. This edition is focused on one of our outstanding Vintage Roots Fund Scholars, Nadia Mincey. As the acting CEO of the Ever After Wine bar, Nadia and her business partner Kelly are making waves within Elk Groove, California in their new business venture. Through balancing motherhood and being a full time business owner, Nadia continues to prove that women can do anything and everything especially within the wine industry. Through their story-inspired wine bar concept, their low invention wines are seen as more approachable and great for those curious about the wine world. But it doesn't end their as the Ever After Wine bar hosts events year round to supplement an additional fun twist to the enjoyment of wine. In our second edition of this month's Women's History series we are highlighting the one and only Lois Cho! As the acting CEO of CHO Wines LLC and former family nurse practitioner, Lois is the true embodiment of women can do it all. And as you all know, here at the Roots Fund we love acknowledging changemakers within the industry. Lois is no exception as her and her husband are the very first Korean-American winemaker within the state of Oregon. There delightfully diverse variety of wines ranging from earthy yet raspberry filled Pinot Noir and smooth citrusy Chardonnay to their crisp sparkling options, CHO wines continues to prove themselves as a winery to watch. Her leadership and direction has even lead to an acknowledgement in Wine Enthusiastics' Future 40 Tastemakers in 2023. It's National Riesling Day! So of course we had to sit true to our Roots and share some information about one of our favorite grapes! Originating in the Rhine region of Germany, Riesling has since expanded into recognizable wine regions such as Alsace in France and Wachau in Austria. Its aromatic and reliable characteristics has since solidified it as one of the most notable and important varieties grown today. Of course it has gained popularity in Germany, France, and Austria, however Riesling continues to take the world by storm as almost every wine or grocery store offers a Riesling option. Ranging from lusciously sweet to very dry, the versatility of Riesling knows no bounds thus initiating its expansion into many New World countries. The start of March means the start of one of our favorite months ... Women's History! In celebration of Women's History month we will be highlight groundbreaking women within the wine and spirits industry who continue to open doors for generations behind them. Today we are focusing on the "face" of Argentine wine, Dr. Laura Catena. From her distinguished educational background graduating magna cum laude from Harvard University to receiving her Ph.D. from Stanford, saying Laura is a trailblazer is simply an understatement. As a fourth generation winemaker she balances a life in both Mendoza, Argentina and California as the Managing Director of the Bodega Catena Zapata and the CEO and Founder of the Catena Institute of Wine, and a Emergency Physician at the San Francisco Medical Center. While maintaining these roles she also published her book: Vino Argentino, An Insider's Guide to the Wines and Wine Country of Argentina further adding to her impressive career. However most notably, she is highly esteemed as a prominent activist and expert within sharing information about the intricate relationship between wine and health.
