Silicon Valley’s Changing Autonomous Vehicle Landscape: Licensing, Experiences, Personally Owned AVs In this episode of Autonomy Markets,?Grayson Brulte and Walter Piecyk discuss the latest developments in the autonomous vehicle industry, drawing insights from Grayson’s recent trip to Silicon Valley. There is an emerging shift towards developing autonomous driving stacks and licensing the technology to OEMs and mobility platform providers. Nuro is embracing this trend as they announced their new business models this week. As the autonomous vehicle business models change, consumer exceptions are changing in parallel. There is an increasing focus on premium experiences in autonomy as both startups and global OEMs begin to develop plans for personally owned autonomous vehicles. While the best laid plans often go awry, this time around OEMs are learning from the mistakes that they made when they jumped two feet into electrification with no real consumer strategy and no EV supply chain strategy. With growing competition from Chinese autonomous vehicle companies, U.S. based autonomous vehicle companies are beginning to focus on costs. As they focus on costs, the debate around LiDAR and if it’s needed to develop an SAE Level 4 autonomous vehicle continues to rage. Wrapping up the episode, Grayson and Walt discuss the latest buzz surrounding the autonomous vehicle industry including potential pivots and partnerships in the industry. ?? This Week in The Autonomy Economy presented by Koop, The Road to Autonomy Index?returned 2.36%, Nuro announced a new business model—licensing, Uber expanded their partnership with Waymo to the Austin and Atlanta markets and China’s ambitions to dominate and export autonomous vehicles?continues to grow. Earlier in the week, Applied Intuition hosted?Intersect 24?at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California. It was a wonderful event that put AI and software at the forefront of automotive. The Road to Autonomy founder, Grayson Brulte moderated the? From the Ground Up: How Automotive and AI Startups Shape the Industry?panel. During the event, it became very evident that?Applied Intuition?is one of the most important companies in autonomy today. We would highly recommend attending Intersect 25 next year. During our time in Silicon Valley, we met with Nuro and several autonomous driving startups and it became very evident to us that we are in the midst of a major shift in autonomy. A shift that is going to usher in the licensing era. Licensing was top of mind for all of the companies that we met with during our trip. Look for more announcements related to licensing and autonomy in the coming quarters. Licensing is going to unlock the personally owned autonomous vehicle.?(hint, hint) Today at 2pm EST we will be?releasing?the second episode of?Autonomy Markets, co-hosted by Grayson Brulte and Walter Piecyk. This week, Grayson and Walter discuss Silicon Valley’s changing autonomous vehicle landscape, licensing, experiences and personally owned autonomous vehicles. Later in the week on Tuesday, we will be releasing a The Road to Autonomy podcast conversation with Finch Fulton, Government Affairs and Policy Advisor, K&L Gates about about what impact the 2024 Presidential Election could have on autonomous vehicle and truck regulations. This Week in The Autonomy Economy presented by Koop, The Road to Autonomy Index?declined 4.97%, Komatsu became the first company in the mining industry to have 10 autonomous trucks surpass 100,000 autonomous hours each, Intel is exploring a sale of Mobileye and Waymo is eyeing profitability. Autonomous vehicles are becoming a business, now the big question that remains is when do they become profitable? What is it going to take for robotaxis and autonomous trucks to become profitable? In autonomous mining applications, it’s the labor costs, transportation and housing costs (Western Australia) and increased productivity. For robotaxis, will it be the decreasing hardware costs and increased availability? For autonomous trucks, will it be ability to operate 24/7? These are all questions that remain today, but will be answered as autonomy scales. As autonomy scales, there is always going to be a dissenting group of individuals and special interests who for right or for wrong have chosen to make it their lives work to stop the advancement of automation and autonomy. Case in point, the International Longshoremen’s Association is?openly threatening?to shutdown the U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast ports that handle 43% of U.S. imports on October 1st, if an 80% pay raise over six years is not approved and automation and semi-automated terminals aren’t banned. A strike will cause billions in economic damage, while potentially reaccelerating inflation, just as the Fed currently prepares for a rate cut(s). The more the unions push for no-automation and higher wages, the more companies are going to move towards automation and autonomy. At the end of the day, unions could end up accelerating the adoption of autonomy. These stories and more in This Week in The Autonomy Economy. Applied Intuition to Develop Autonomous Trucks with Isuzu This Week in The Autonomy Economy presented by Koop, The Road to Autonomy Index?returned 0.47%, Applied Intuition partnered with Isuzu to develop autonomous trucks for?the Japanese market, Uber announced a new autonomous driving partnership with Wayve and Beijing is doubling down on autonomous vehicles. Qasar Younis and Peter Ludwig, Co-Founders of Applied Intuition continue to build one of the most financially successful businesses in autonomy. The deal with Isuzu to develop autonomous trucks for the Japanese market is just the latest in a long list of strategic decisions and acquisitions that?Applied Intuition has?made. When the market begins to measure the success of autonomy on revenue and profitability, Applied Intuition will be right there at the top and perhaps in the top spot. With 18 of the top 20 global automotive OEMs as well as the top global truck OEMs as customers, they are developing their business moat. To quote Warren Buffett; “A truly great business must have an enduring ‘moat’ that protects excellent returns on invested capital”. The moat surrounding Applied Intuition keeps on growing. On the theme of growing,?Uber keeps on growing their autonomous vehicle partnerships. Over the last two weeks, Uber has announced autonomous vehicle partnerships with?Cruise and Wayve. Is Zoox next? Or perhaps an expansion of the Waymo partnership to both San Francisco and LA? Only time will tell, but it is becoming very apparent that?Uber is the platform for autonomy. Uber is going to enable autonomous vehicles to scale. The autonomy ecosystem is beginning to take shape and investors are once again paying attention to the sector. As investors’ interest in autonomy grows, we are introducing a new podcast called Autonomy Markets. Autonomy Markets is co-hosted by Grayson Brulte, Founder & CEO of The Road to Autonomy and Walter Piecyk, Partner & TMT Analyst, LightShed Partners and General Partner, LightShed Ventures. Each week Grayson and Walter will break down the autonomy markets and offer their unique perspectives. Grayson will offer his insight and opinion from an autonomy industry insider’s perspective and Walt will offer the Wall Street perspective. Autonomy Markets will be released every Sunday at 2pm EST. The first episode will be released on Sunday, September 8th. Episodes will be available on all The Road to Autonomy podcast platforms including?Apple Podcasts,?Spotify?and?YouTube.
