Black excellence shines every day, but this month, we celebrate it with intention. From honoring legacies like Sylvia Terry’s to uplifting the next generation of scholars and leaders, we recognize the impact of Black students, alumni, and trailblazers. Sylvia Terry (Grad ’72) was a champion for Black student success at UVA, best known for creating the Peer Advisor Program, which has supported generations of Black students in their academic and personal journeys. Her dedication helped shape a stronger, more connected community. This year, her legacy continues as the Sylvia Terry Scholarship will be awarded to a rising third-year student, ensuring her impact lives on. The application will be open until March 5th! Money talks, and so did our Ridley Scholars! ??? At our Financial Literacy Workshop, scholars had the opportunity to ask their burning financial questions and dive into a hands-on budget case study with the incredible Anne-Marie Gilliam, CFP?. Her engaging approach made complex topics easy to understand, keeping the room energized and excited about financial planning! To top it off, each scholar walked away with a valuable guidebook to continue their financial journey beyond the workshop. ???? This Black History Month, we honor two trailblazers who transformed UVA and continue to inspire us today.? ? John Merchant (Law ’58) made history as UVA Law’s first Black graduate and went on to found the Ridley Scholarship Program, empowering future Black scholars. Decades after, Glynn Key (Col ’86, Law ’89) redefined leadership as the first Black woman to chair UVA’s Honor Committee and serve as Student Council president, ultimately shaping national policy through her bold vision. ? This MLK Jr. weekend was truly inspiring! I had the honor and joy of facilitating a Vision Board Workshop with some amazing Ridley scholars at UVA! ???? Together, we embraced the power of dreaming big, crafting clear visions, and building actionable plans to make them a reality. The energy in the room was incredible as we set SMART goals, shared ideas, and tapped into our creativity—all while enjoying great music and meaningful connections.
