Today National Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Did you know that the Society of Breast Imaging recommends annual screening for women starting at age 40 rather than 50? They also recommend getting screened every other year through age 74 for “moderate net benefit.” Getting regular screening and performing self-exams are crucial ways to catch breast cancer early. #NationalBreastCancerAwarenessDay #BreastCancer #40andforward #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth

Do you know the members of your health care team? It's important to know what type of health care professional you are looking for to get your desired care. That's why we're starting a new series breaking down the differences between commonly confused fields. What’s the difference between an optometrist, an ophthalmologist and an optician? According to the American Optometric Association, "optometrists take a leading role in patient care with respect to eye and vision care, as well as general health and well-being.” Upon completion of a bachelor’s degree, optometrists attend a four-year doctor of optometry program, obtain clinical experience, pass the National Board of Examiners in Optometry exams and secure their license to practice. Optometrists can choose to specialize, which requires additional training or residency. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, ophthalmologists are “eye doctors with advanced medical and surgical training,” and they have the education and training to diagnose and treat all eye conditions. Ophthalmologists attend medical school for four years, work an internship for one year and spend at least three years in a resident program. Ophthalmologists spend 17,000+ hours gaining clinical experience through medical school, internships, and residency. If ophthalmologists choose to specialize, they spend at least one additional year training. According to the United Opticians Association, opticians are spectacle and contact lens professionals that help patients choose the right vision correction devices. In most states, opticians earn a technical degree at an associate’s level and a license to practice. #Optometrist #Ophthalmologist #Optician
