As Reinvestment Fund has worked on improving access to healthy, fresh foods in underserved communities, we have devoted significant resources to understanding such access, particularly in low-income areas. Our Limited Supermarket Access (LSA) Analysis has guided decisions for over a decade, helping to identify inequitable food access and drive investments in areas that need them most. The Richmond Agrihood project highlights the ongoing challenges in equitable land use and community-driven food solutions. Research shows that tackling food insecurity requires support for innovative projects that go beyond the traditional supermarket. Despite strong community backing, the project was stalled, underscoring the need to reform local zoning codes to enable urban agriculture practices and address food access disparities. ?? @ https://lnkd.in/eS4GT5Yr

Affordable rent in Philadelphia would need to drop by around $300 per month to truly serve families in need of affordable housing. Defined as “the midpoint of a specific area’s income distribution,” the Area Median Income (AMI) is a regional measure often used as a shorthand to signal the relative affordability of a particular housing initiative. However, the current AMI is based on data from 11 counties across four states, distorting local income levels and affordability. WHYY'S latest article highlights research from Reinvestment Fund's Ira Goldstein and Herbert Wetzel, “Why Many Philadelphians Cannot Afford Affordable Housing,” shedding light on this disconnect. Read the article and our recent research (https://bit.ly/3zUtAlA) to explore how we can develop a more accurate way to measure and meet the city's housing needs—and rethink how we address housing affordability: https://bit.ly/3BA9U6R

Philly housing programs are rooted in regional incomes. Should that change?
