Why is #energyefficiency crucial to the ?EU’s #electrification strategy? ? What do we need from the next generation of energy efficiency policies? Louise Sunderland, Samuel Thomas and I from the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP) have been looking at these questions. In a nutshell: ? Huge electrification process expected to reach ???? EU climate goal ???? , coupled with massive #renewables and #grids investments, and more flexible production, storage and use of electricity. #Energyefficiency policy already supports this process by promoting efficient, electric technologies like heat pumps, but more could be done to moderate increases in electricity demand, facilitate demand-side #flexibility and contribute to affordability and inclusion. When ? and where ?? energy is saved increasingly matters, as the #electricity system is facing constraints that are local and time-specific. The next step is for decision makers to: ?? Recognise and assess the specific value of energy efficiency in the electrification process ?? Explore the role for targeted energy efficiency programmes that focus on specific challenges ?? This often-overlooked tool can play a transformative role in achieving?affordable, inclusive, and sustainable electrification. In a new report titled "Right here! Right now! New roles for energy efficiency in an electrified energy system," Marion Santini, Louise Sunderland, and Samuel Thomas of the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP) explain: ? How energy efficiency provides significant value ? How decision-makers can maximise their policies’ impact ? Why energy efficiency is important for EU Electrification Strategy Meeting the EU climate goal will require a huge electrification process + massive #renewables ? + massive #grid investments ?? + more flexible production, storage and use of electricity. ? Sound scary? Strong #energyefficiency policies already support electrification by promoting efficient electric technologies like #heatpumps.
