A heartfelt thanks to James C. Rhee for taking the time to chat with our associates this week at our headquarters! His book, the red helicopter, was one of my favorite reads so far this year. ?? He built a culture of radical transparency and shared ownership on a foundation of kindness. His people-first approach won the hearts and minds of his team and led to the incredible transformation of the Ashley Stewart brand. It's amazing what you can accomplish with space for honest discussion, support for innovation, true collaboration and a team that cares for each other. His approach is so consistent with the #goldenrule and the culture that we are building at JCPenney that our entire team left with confidence in what we can achieve...thank you, James!
On Wednesday, JCPenney CEO Marc Rosen hosted James C. Rhee, best-selling author of the red helicopter and former Ashley Stewart CEO, for a fireside chat with associates at the Company’s headquarters in Plano, Texas. When James was in kindergarten, he was gifted a toy red helicopter in gratitude for simply sharing his lunch with a friend who was going through a hard time. Decades later, the lessons learned from receiving this red helicopter served him as he developed a human centered-framework for success in Ashley Stewart’s transformation, a model now often imitated across the industry. The former high school teacher and Harvard Law graduate turned private equity investor unexpectedly took the helm of Ashley Stewart in 2013, and despite major hurdles, managed a transformation success story by leading with kindness, authenticity and goodwill. James shares his insights and knowledge in his book, red helicopter, which was published earlier this year. The conversation between Marc and James centered around how kindness and intangible goodwill can reshape a business and drive a new approach for #leadership and success. See below for photos from this week’s event.

I?finished red helicopter within days of its official release in April. I laughed, I wept, I was incredibly moved. The book stirred something in me – I find myself thinking back on it often, even to this day. It’s found a permanent place on my bookshelf. It’s a read I’ll revisit every milestone birthday because it is timeless – indeed a parable for our times - and a story that has helped me embrace my own journey with greater appreciation, wonder and peace. I never could have imagined I'd have the chance to meet the author, James C. Rhee. He came to our JCPenney headquarters to speak with associates this week and it was…indescribably special. Nothing about James’ journey was easy. Even writing the book and summoning the will to recount some of his darkest life moments must have been hard. But I’m so glad and grateful he did. We are all better for it and I can’t wait to see the red helicopter movement soar. Thank you for telling your story and inspiring us all, James!

On National Voter Registration Day, please spend two minutes watching this poignant original film. The youth of today are watching everything and everyone. Our fourth finalist in our partnership with AAHSFF - asking global high school students what ?? means to them. How many arbitrary (and false) mental models are we all carrying? Let them go, because the future has no patience for it... There is truth in kindness + math. Perhaps start there... the red helicopter #math #kindness #facts #systemsdesign #startanew

Yesterday, I had the honor to meet James Rhee, author of the bestselling book entitled the red helicopter ―a parable for our times: lead change with kindness (plus a little math), and get my book signed. During his session at the 45th ASBDC Annual conference, we learned about how the combination of "Kindness and Math" fueled a transcendent success story! #2024sbdc

Small businesses rely on social capital and agility to augment their capital base. They also often create a public good in the form of community.
