Last week, Historic Athens invited The Red & Black to present in their last History Hour series of the year! We discussed our long 131-year history of serving the community with reliable news, and how we are working to improve and expand our journalism going forward. Thank you for having us!
关于我们
The Red and Black Publishing Company, Inc. is an independent, private, not-for-profit corporation. Founded in 1893, the paper operated for 87 years under the University of Georgia. In 1980, the State Board of Regents approved independent status for the organization. As a 501c3 nonprofit, we have dual missions: to provide our community with reliable, independent news; and to train students in journalism. The Red & Black circulates the largest college newspaper in Georgia. Each week we distribute 10,000 copies of the print edition both on and off campus, reaching nearly 45,000 students, faculty and staff. The print edition — and daily online content — cover University of Georgia and Athens news, sports, arts, music, culture and opinion pieces. The print and digital platforms carry classifieds and advertising for local and national products and services. We also publish a magazine, Ampersand, which covers food, fashion, music and entertainment. The Red and Black is operationally and financially independent from the University of Georgia. The organization receives no student activity fees or other funding from UGA. Operations are sustained through the sale of advertising. Our twofold mission is to provide a training ground for students interested in gaining experience in various aspects of media and to provide a high quality news source for the University of Georgia community.

Today, I published what I consider one of the most important articles I've ever done for The Red & Black Publishing Co.. Aspen, a fellow UGA student who was at Apalachee High School during the shooting earlier this semester, was kind enough to trust me to tell her story. In the days after Sept. 4, I knew some UGA students had been there and had been thinking about if/how to reach out and offer them a place to speak, if they wanted to. Coincidentally, a video Aspen made in the following days popped up on my TikTok feed, so I saved it, waited a few weeks and eventually reached out. I would be lying if I said I haven't thought about Aspen and our interview and this story quite literally every day since we met in October. It's hard for me to even articulate why this matters so much to me, I just know that it does. I am beyond honored that Aspen allowed me to hear and share her story. After two years, this is one of my final stories on the news desk before I move on to a new chapter as EIC, and I could not be prouder to have this be part of my legacy. If you read nothing else I've posted, please give this a few minutes of your time. (PS - big thank you to Samantha Hurley for the stunning portrait) https://lnkd.in/eAZTT3e4
