As a series of sinkholes slowly closed the eastbound and westbound lanes of Route 80 in the borough, residents of a nearby apartment complex say they are concerned for their safety. Alexandra Lawler, who lives in the Avalon Wharton apartment complex with her boyfriend, said they began noticing cracks and fractures throughout their building after the sinkholes started to appear on the interstate highway. There are cracks around doorways, elevator entrances and staircases, as well as visible gaps between the walls and floor, she said. https://lnkd.in/egy65gSj #northjerseynews #wharton #money #realestate

A room of 20 eighth graders at Paterson’s School 26 listened quietly on a recent Friday morning as their science teacher went over a lesson on genetics. The teacher, Chatlyn Padirayon, called on students by name, asking them questions. Then, she gave the whole class some fill-in-the-blank exercises to make sure they learned the material. During the session, the youngsters rarely looked up from the screens on their open Chromebooks. That’s because the educator conducting the lesson wasn’t standing in the classroom with them. She wasn’t even in New Jersey. Padirayon was conducting the science class virtually, part of Paterson Public Schools’?$2 million contract with Texas-based Proximity Learning?for online instruction to address the district’s?problem with teaching vacancies. https://lnkd.in/ePRwzitQ #northjerseynews #paterson

Over the last six weeks,?several sinkholes?have opened up on Interstate 80 in Wharton, closing both sides of the highway and?frustrating commuters, locals and businesses?with?detours?and heavy traffic. The voids, in both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Route 80, are believed to have been caused by?abandoned mines, which are scattered underneath several surrounding towns. In what has been a lengthy and costly process so far, engineers and construction crews have been working around the clock to repair and reopen the roads. On Monday, the New Jersey Transportation Department said it is too soon to provide an estimate on the cost of the repairs. However, Murphy said Saturday that the work is costing $150,000 per day. Over the course of eight weeks, that adds up to more than $8 million. The number does not consider the previous month of work or the possibility that the repairs end up taking longer than expected. https://lnkd.in/emMazaPU #northjerseynews #newjersey

The Board of Education plans to close a $7.1 million budget shortfall by laying off as many as 40 employees and using in-house guards instead of police officers for school security, among other proposed cutbacks. Reductions to the K-12 district budget for next school year may also include the cancellation of $200,000 worth of subscriptions for computer software and the privatization of an extended-care program. https://lnkd.in/ej9zdS3q #northjerseynews #wayne

When Olga Cherbetko suffered a stroke 18 months ago and showed signs of cognitive decline, her sister Rose Golembiewski — who had moved into Olga’s West Milford house — became her caregiver. Rose, 82, would cook, shop, pay bills, administer medicine and take Olga, 81, to doctors’ appointments. But as Olga's condition worsened, her behavior became more erratic. The sisters would often quarrel. And that would trigger Olga to call the police. Those calls set in motion a slow but powerful bureaucratic process that resulted in New Jersey state government taking guardianship of Olga last year and remanding her to a nursing home after emergency responders thought she may have suffered another stroke in December. https://lnkd.in/e-4KkgwC #northjerseynews #newjersey #health

Demolition of the Sheraton Crossroads Hotel by implosion is tentatively scheduled for April 27. Township Engineer Mike Kelly announced the demolition and the date during Monday's council meeting. "The developer's demolition contractors implode buildings, and we had a very productive meeting with administration, police, fire, ambulance, the building department and my office," Kelly said. "We went over everything and asked that they come and make a presentation to the council about everything they're going to be doing." https://lnkd.in/eFUJKZZW #northjerseynews #mahwah

Theodora's Pizzeria sat empty on a recent Saturday afternoon. Sussex Meat Packing has seen its weekday lunch crowd all but disappear. And Rocky's Pasties ― a 100-year-old business selling Cornish meat pies ― is down 30%. “Customers come in and say it used to take them 10 to 15 minutes to get here," said Tom “Rocky” Rodkewitz, the manager of Rocky’s. "Now it takes them an hour.” Blame the sinkholes. https://lnkd.in/e63n3SBq #northjerseynews #newjersey #wharton

Which Oscar-winning actor, sitting with what famous state governor, was applauded by the whole restaurant when he went to the bathroom? What beloved TV icon heard herself prematurely pronounced dead by patrons at the other end of the bar? Remember "blind items"? The stock-in-trade of Broadway gossip columnists — back in the day when Broadway?had?gossip columnists. The day when Walter Winchell and Dorothy Kilgallen, the Broadway stars they tattled on, and the star-struck theatergoers who adored them, all hung out at?Sardi's. "Sardi's is the unofficial Broadway hall of fame," said Giovanni Felidi — "Johnny" or "Gianni" to his friends. And that's pretty much everyone. https://lnkd.in/e3fcCSHF #northjerseynews #entertainment #theater
