关于我们

The mission of the Preservation Alliance is to actively promote the appreciation, protection, and appropriate use and development of the Philadelphia region’s historic buildings, communities and landscapes. The Philadelphia region is rich in historic places. It is also home to countless people and organizations dedicated to the care and stewardship of our immense cultural and architectural heritage. The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia is a membership-based, not-for-profit advocacy organization that shines a spotlight on the places that make the Philadelphia region special and gives a voice and a toolbox to those who care deeply about protecting them for the future. Through educational outreach, planning efforts, and direct advocacy, the Preservation Alliance is the region’s principal public champion of our historic built environment. The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia was established in 1996 to be the principal historic preservation advocacy organization for the Philadelphia region. We grew out of a merger between two predecessor organizations: the Philadelphia Historic Preservation Corporation (established in 1979) and the Preservation Coalition of Greater Philadelphia (established in 1982), two distinct but complementary organizations with long track records in the city. Over the past 35 years, we’ve experienced our share of milestones, suffered some regrettable losses, and celebrated some important victories. We are unwavering in our conviction that Philadelphia is a better place today, and will be a better place tomorrow, thanks to the passion and devotion of our predecessors, and we are proud to carry this legacy into the future.

  • We are proud that our nomination for Beneficial Savings Fund Society, South Philadelphia Branch, was officially added to the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places this spring! This magnificent 1928 building, designed by the renowned Horace Trumbauer and likely overseen by Julian Abele, is now recognized for its architectural and historical significance. As part of our 2024 Annual Appeal, we invite you to continue supporting the preservation of Philadelphia’s historic buildings. Your generosity helps us protect landmarks like this one for future generations. https://lnkd.in/ehFiKeJ2

  • Last night, we were thrilled to welcome esteemed architectural historian David Brownlee Ph.D., FSAH, for a captivating lecture on the architecture of Horace Trumbauer. Exploring the enigmatic genius of Philadelphia’s own Horace Trumbauer, Dr. Brownlee highlighted the stunning range of Trumbauer’s work, from opulent Gilded Age mansions to iconic public landmarks like the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Harvard’s Widener Library. The evening also shed light on the vital contributions of Julian Abele, the trailblazing African-American designer whose artistry shaped many of Trumbauer’s most renowned projects. Thank you to everyone who joined us for this engaging discussion as part of our Fall Speaker Series. Special thanks to the Cosmopolitan Club for hosting us in their beautiful space.

  • This spring, the historic Airy Street Prison in Norristown was pulled back from the brink of demolition, thanks to a passionate campaign by the Friends of Airy Street Prison and the Preservation Alliance. Built in 1851 by Napoleon LeBrun, this architectural masterpiece is on the way to a bright future as a revitalized community asset. We’re proud to support the ongoing effort to rehabilitate this landmark, proving once again the power of preservation in shaping vibrant, livable communities.
