What makes a strong democracy? The #InternationalDayofDemocracy is coming up on Sept. 15–a time to reflect on our democracy, the challenges we face, and find a path forward together. Here at Pew, we work to empower lawmakers and citizens alike—beginning with gathering facts that can provide a common language for people to discuss their differences, allowing a diversity of voices and viewpoints to be heard and respected. https://pew.org/3zuvV6m

Public spaces like parks and playgrounds and municipal buildings like libraries and fire houses, as well as city assets like museums, are generally maintained by local government through capital investments. We looked at the Philadelphia (our hometown) government’s capital investments between fiscal years 2011 and 2022, where they were concentrated throughout the city, and who benefitted from them. The differences in funding across demographics were apparent, with most of the largest and more expensive assets concentrated around Center City, an area that also has some of the highest median household incomes. Capital investments that benefit neighborhoods, like rec centers and health centers, were more evenly distributed. Our findings: https://pew.org/3TpbsGQ #Philadelphia #CapitalInvestment #PewTrusts

The International Day of Democracy in September is an occasion that invites us to reflect on what representative government means to us. ? ? At Pew, we believe that a healthy democracy depends upon an informed electorate, civic participation, and an effective government that recognizes and serves the needs of its citizens.?? ? There’s no doubt that democracy is under strain and trust in government is declining. The Pew Research Center reported in July that 72% of Americans say this nation used to be a good example of democracy but isn’t anymore. Rebuilding trust—and strengthening democracy—begins with gathering facts that can provide a common language for people to discuss their differences, allowing a diversity of voices and viewpoints to be heard and respected.? ? Against this backdrop, I hope you’ll join me in reflecting on what democracy means to you and how Americans can work together to support a stronger, healthier, and more trusted union. https://lnkd.in/eXVp4wmA?

Excited to share the findings from The Pew Charitable Trusts latest work examining equity in City of Philadelphia capital budget spending from FY11 - FY22. Philadelphia is only the second city to undertake this type of analysis, which explores how capital dollars have been distributed across the city and what groups of residents have benefitted from this spending. This research is incredible work by Alix Sullivan and Mari Gonzalez who analyzed thousands of assets and encumbrances over this time period. On a citywide basis, capital investment in Philadelphia amounted to $802 per capital over the period, although it varies widely across the city. A democracy is supposed to reflect the will of the people, but how can we know what the people want? One very important way is through public opinion polling—which uses surveys of relatively small samples of people to represent the much larger population they are drawn from. Take Pew Research Center's 10-question quiz and see just how much you know about this critical tool as #InternationalDayofDemocracy nears.

More than 2.2 million U.S. veterans used telehealth services in 2022—including approximately one million who received mental health care.? ? That means living without internet could lead to life without health care. The online networks that offer so many people support and community can only be accessed via network access itself. And for veterans, among other at-risk groups, life without broadband can be dangerous.? ? Julia Brinjac, PMP from the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority has witnessed this firsthand.?? ? #BroadbandForAll #DigitalDivide #RuralBroadband https://pew.org/3LTdw5N

???? The wave of state revenue during fiscal 2021 and 2022—coupled with more than $800 in federal funds—led to a flurry of new policymaking. This included tax cuts, more spending on families, and wage hikes. The wave has broken, with state tax revenue falling by more than 9% in 2023—the only drop in 40 years not during a recession. What can states learn from this unprecedented experience? Our experts dig in. https://pew.org/4gfNDvd
