Statement from The Peale on the Proposed Elimination of IMLS The Peale stands in strong opposition?to the proposed elimination of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)?by the Trump administration, a move that threatens the cultural and educational infrastructure of our nation. As the only federal agency dedicated to supporting museums and libraries, IMLS has played a vital role in preserving history, expanding access to knowledge, and fostering innovation in cultural institutions across the United States. The Peale, like many institutions, has directly benefited from IMLS support, which has enabled us to preserve Baltimore’s stories, create accessible programming for diverse audiences, and advance digital storytelling initiatives that connect the past to the present. Without IMLS, not only The Peale but countless museums, libraries, and archives across the country—especially those serving underrepresented communities—will face devastating funding gaps that jeopardize their ability to serve the public. We urge Congress to reject this short-sighted proposal?and to reaffirm its commitment to sustaining America’s cultural heritage. The elimination of IMLS would send a clear signal that the federal government is abandoning its role in supporting the institutions that educate, inspire, and unite us. Take Action: Help Save IMLS We call on our supporters and fellow institutions to join us in taking a stand: ??Contact your elected officials?– Urge your Senators and Representatives to oppose the elimination of IMLS and support continued federal funding for museums and libraries. Find your representatives here. ??Sign the petition?– Join national efforts to save IMLS by adding your name to petitions organized by advocacy groups like the American Alliance of Museums (AAM)?and the American Library Association (ALA). ??Spread the word?– Share this message on social media and use the hashtag #SaveIMLS?to amplify our voices. Museums and libraries are essential to our democracy, our history, and our future. Now, more than ever, we must stand together to protect them.
关于我们
The Peale is a community museum, based in Baltimore, Maryland, and a place where anyone can contribute their story to the city’s cultural and historical narrative. Together with creators and storytellers of all kinds, we’re actively redefining the role of museums in society and building the largest archive of Baltimore stories in the world. The Peale opened as the nation’s first purpose-built museum in 1814. Since then, the space has served many purposes, including Baltimore’s first city hall, the first public high school available to people of color in the state of Maryland, and the birthplace of the Baltimore Gas & Electric company, where gaslight technology was first introduced to "Light City." Today, we continue this legacy of adapting to the city's needs by being a platform and showcase for exhibits and cultural programming driven by local creators and storytellers.? We are a non-collecting museum. We don’t collect physical objects like paintings, furniture, or artifacts. Instead we support community projects, collaborating with local creators and culture keepers to realize the public programming, outreach, and education that is most relevant to their communities. Anyone can contribute to our growing archive of digital stories about the city – the largest in the world – to help preserve the intangible cultural heritage of Baltimore and cultivate a more complete narrative for our city.?

We're exciting about hosting such important conversations this weekend! Please join us! RSVP on our website https://www.thepeale.org.
What will the museums of the future hold? "The Future of Here," an ongoing exhibit at The Peale, Baltimore's Community Museum, gathers and presents imaginary artifacts from the everyday life of a future people that might one day inhabit the landscape of this city. By assembling these artifacts from the trash and debris we leave behind, the exhibit raises questions about what we value and what we tend to neglect. Join us at The Peale next Saturday, March 22, for a panel discussion exploring these questions featuring Winter BearKing, Education Programs Specialist and Indigenous Outreach Coordinator at MCHC; Sanchita Balachandran, Director of the Smithsonian’s Museum Conservation Institute; and Leila Grothe, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at The Baltimore Museum of Art. The conversation will be moderated by artist Jordan Tierney and anthropologist Anand Pandian, who developed “The Future of Here” in collaboration with a team of students and creators at Johns Hopkins University. The Peale is deeply saddened to share that our Chief Operations Officer, Kim Domanski, passed away over the weekend. Kim was not only a valued colleague but also a dear friend to many. Her infectious laugh and unwavering kindness left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. Kim opened The Peale’s doors to all and worked tirelessly to help Baltimore’s creators realize their visions in our galleries. Her dedication, generosity, and quiet yet powerful leadership shaped The Peale in countless ways. She never sought credit, yet her impact is woven into everything we do. Her spirit will always be felt within these walls. She will be greatly missed. We will share more about Kim’s contributions in our newsletter and on our website soon. Please join us in celebrating Kim’s life and sharing your memories. Kim is pictured here with her life partner of 30 years, Ed Istwan.
