Susan Guess, Chief Marketing Officer, received the Murray State University Golden Horseshoe Award yesterday in Murray. It is MSU's highest award given to an alumnus or alumnae for outstanding service and support. The award has only been presented to 77 alumni in the university's history. Susan served on the Murray State Board of Regents for nine years. She served as vice chair for two terms and her final year as board chair. She contributed to the Applied Public Relations college textbook, which was authored by MSU professor Marcie Hinton. Susan is a 1987 graduate of Murray State where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in public relations. She also earned a Master of Public Administration degree at the University of Louisville. She is a graduate of Leadershp Kentucky and Leadership Paducah (voted Class Member of the Year). She was elected President of the Leadership Paducah Alumni Assocation. She was also named Kentucky Young Careerist and served as President of the Paducah Business and Profesional Women. She has won nearly 20 Telly Awards for Paducah Bank television commercials and has been recognized nationally for social media. She serves on the Kentucky Financial Institutions Baord. Susan has a long history of community involvement. She was the second woman to chair the Paducah Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and only the second person to chair twice. She also chaired the Lourdes Hospital Foundation Board of Directors for six years. She was named Kentucky’s top volunteer twice. The first time was in 1998 after she chaired a campaign to build a $100,000 memorial garden at Heath High School. In 2015, she received the award for her anti-bullying efforts throughout the state. She won a national HUD community service award after starting Girl Scout troops in Paducah’s public housing. She and daughter, Morgan Guess are the co-founders of the Guess Anti-Bullying Foundation. After lobbying the governor to appoint a statewide task force on the issue, both Guesses were appointed to the Kentucky Youth Bullying Prevention Task Force. They successfully lobbied for a bill to define bullying in Kentucky. That law now provides protections for all 640,000 Kentucky students. They were both awarded the Kentucky Justice Association Consumer Safety Award in 2016. They introduced an official Be Kind Kentucky license plate earlier this year and are donating all proceeds to the state's 10-youth mental health drop-in centers. They have added seven kindness murals around the Paducah community and her family hosts Scarf in the Park every Christmas eve.
