Breaking news ?????: On November 16, 2024, Indigenous climate activists in Rio de Janeiro staged a striking protest by sinking giant cutouts of G20 leaders into water to demand urgent action on climate change. The demonstration, held under the banner "We are the answer," called on the world's largest economies to prioritize cutting CO2 emissions and addressing global warming. Protesters also highlighted the critical issue of legally demarcating Indigenous lands in Brazil, a measure seen as essential to protecting forests and mitigating climate impacts. The protest occurred ahead of the G20 summit, which coincides with the ongoing COP29 climate talks. Both events are pivotal for advancing international climate finance agreements, particularly in light of growing divisions between developed and developing nations over funding responsibilities. Meanwhile, U.S. president-elect Donald Trump's expected withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and his controversial energy appointments add uncertainty to global climate cooperation.

The call to action for Norway regarding deep-sea mining is growing louder. In June 2023, the Norwegian government announced plans to open the doors to deep-sea mining, sparking concerns across the region. In response, the Nordic Council has urged both Iceland and Norway to join a moratorium on this practice, calling for further examination of its potential environmental, social, and economic impacts. Representatives from Greenland and the Youth Council have strongly criticized Norway's decision, adding pressure to reconsider the move. UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment, Astrid Puentes Ria?o, has highlighted the dangers of deep-sea mining, stating that it will perpetuate systematic inequalities. In a recent resolution, the Nordic Council formally called on Nordic governments to impose a ban on deep-sea mining in international waters until the full consequences of such activities are thoroughly investigated. This recommendation marks a significant step in ensuring a sustainable future for the region's ecosystems and communities. For many, it?s out of sight out of mind. But the #deepsea regulates our #climate, #fisheries, and produces oxygen that sustains our ocean.
