In uncertain times, showing up matters more than ever. Last month, nearly 30 OTA members, farmers and staff visited 26 offices on Capitol Hill, to share the story of how organic is not just a choice — it’s a solution. Organic agriculture creates jobs,?strengthens economic resilience in rural communities, and builds a food system that prioritizes health and environmental stewardship. In an increasingly unstable geopolitical climate, building and protecting a secure domestic supply chain for organic food is critical. A huge thank you to our members and farmers who shared their stories, and to the policymakers who listened, asked questions, and engaged. Thank you for recognizing the value of organic. Relevant topic alert! Glyphosate often emerges as a concern in discussions with consumers about the advantages of organic practices for both human health and the environment. Fortunately, its use is strictly prohibited in organic agriculture, reinforcing the commitment to safer and more sustainable practices. ?? #organic #science

Is It Gluten or Is It Glyphosate? The Hidden Factor Behind Rising Gluten Sensitivities For years, gluten has been blamed for a wide range of digestive and autoimmune issues, leading to a surge in gluten-free diets. But what if the real culprit isn’t gluten itself, but something else lurking in our wheat supply? In 2006, the use of glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup, was approved as a desiccant for wheat. This meant that farmers could spray glyphosate on wheat fields right before harvest to dry out the crop, making it easier to process. This practice, known as pre-harvest desiccation, allows for a more uniform and efficient harvest. However, it also results in higher glyphosate residues on the final food product. Around the same time, the incidence of celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity skyrocketed. Many people began experiencing bloating, digestive discomfort, brain fog, and other symptoms after consuming wheat, leading to speculation that gluten itself was the problem. But could it be the glyphosate contamination of wheat, rather than gluten, that is causing these issues? Research suggests that glyphosate may be playing a bigger role in digestive issues than previously thought. Here’s how: 1. Disrupts Gut Bacteria Glyphosate acts as an antibiotic, selectively killing beneficial gut bacteria while allowing harmful bacteria to thrive. This imbalance can lead to intestinal permeability (leaky gut), inflammation, and immune system dysfunction, which are all linked to celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. 2. Inhibits Nutrient Absorption Glyphosate disrupts the shikimate pathway, a process essential for plant and microbial life, leading to a reduction in essential amino acids and minerals like magnesium, manganese, and zinc—all of which are critical for gut health. 3. Triggers Autoimmune Reactions: Studies suggest that glyphosate exposure can mimic celiac disease symptoms, potentially confusing the immune system and leading to autoimmune responses against gluten-containing foods. While correlation doesn’t always mean causation, the parallel rise of glyphosate-treated wheat and gluten-related disorders raises serious concerns. A 2013 study by Dr. Anthony Samsel and Dr. Stephanie Seneff proposed that glyphosate disrupts enzymes necessary for proper digestion, leading to symptoms that closely resemble gluten-related disorders. If you’re experiencing gluten sensitivity, consider that it might not be gluten itself but the chemicals used in wheat production. Here’s how to protect yourself: Choose Organic Wheat Products – Organic wheat is grown without glyphosate, reducing your exposure. The debate around gluten and glyphosate is far from over, but one thing is clear: our modern agricultural practices have changed the way we experience food. Whether gluten or glyphosate is to blame, the rising prevalence of food sensitivities suggests that we need a closer look at how our food is grown and processed.
