March is School Board Appreciation Month! Fitting, as our second cohort of School Board Fellows are wrapping up their intensive fellowship experience. We know that strong governance is an essential condition for school improvement. We are proud of our School Board Fellows for their commitment to understanding the principles of data and accountability-centered district leadership that are fundamental to accelerating student growth and ensuring all children have access to a high-quality education. We are glad that there is so much attention on School Boards this month as we approach April 8th's SLPS School Board Elections. Show Me The World Project brings an interdisciplinary program to students at some of our grantee schools, including?Kairos Academies and School District of University City, where they learn about geography, agriculture, and entrepreneurship (among other things) as they run a coffee business to raise money for an international trip. Exciting news from Momentum Academy as their Executive Director, Dr. Miranda Ming, has been accepted into the Pahara Fellowship. Under her leadership, Momentum has established itself as a bright spot in St. Louis' education landscape. Students at all Momentum campuses have shown remarkable growth in math proficiency since she started at Momentum. Three of their four campuses have also demonstrated impressive growth in ELA. With over 80% Black students (compared to 15% statewide), Momentum and Dr. Ming have demonstrated what is possible in terms of closing the Black-White achievement gap and leading St. Louis' children to thrive in school and in life. This Black History Month, we commend Dr. Ming for her historic achievements in support of St. Louis' Black students. We know Dr. Ming will make an incredible representative for our city at the Pahara Fellowship, and we are excited for her opportunity to bring national expertise and collaboration to Momentum to build on their success. #TOTCelebrates
