COP reflections: An Eye for Methane and Carbon Limits as a Key Partner for Methane Emissions Management The?COP (Conference of the Parties) event?is always a good time to take stock of the past year and consider what is left to be done in the future. In the methane space, International Methane Emissions Observatory - IMEO has published one of those reference points that allows us to do both. Full report here: https://lnkd.in/dKK3_73j ? As?oil and gas companies continue working towards improving their understanding of methane emissions there is still much to be done on methane issues globally. Carbon Limits has been, and will continue to be a key partner on the road toward methane emissions management, helping to address some of the challenges highlighted in the IMEO report: ??? Communication on the responses to super-emitter detection using satellite remains low but satellites can play a central role in fast climate action. Our team has previously taken part in quick response programs leading to mitigation and can provide an all-around support from the analysis of images, engagement with local teams, capacity building and mitigation assessment. ?? Despite the leaps in methane emissions quantification in the past few years, some work remains to be done on companies’ quantification and reporting journey. Our OGMP experts and free inventory tool, Mist, have been supporting companies to quantify, report and better understand their methane emissions, while supporting the development of internal capacity of reporting team to be able to guide companies through the next steps. ?????? ??? Action in oil and gas is a critical first step to reduce methane emissions, but other sectors also have a key role to play. The expertise of the Carbon Limits team ranges across all sectors with anthropogenic methane emissions, including oil and gas, coal, agriculture and waste. ??? Capacity building continues to play a key role in providing the tools to local methane champions who have the agency to drive change directly in their organizations. Every year, Carbon Limits supports IMEO in delivering its IMEO’s Methane Training Series?to hundreds of these budding methane champions. ? ?? We would like to take this opportunity to thank the different organizations that have made it possible for us to make this support broadly available including Global Methane Hub, OGCI (Oil and Gas Climate Initiative), The Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), Environmental Defense Fund, Quadrature Climate Foundation, McCall MacBain Foundation, ClimateWorks Foundation and International Methane Emissions Observatory - IMEO. ? We look forward to supporting companies and organizations in leveraging the wealth of methane data that is being made accessible by IMEO’s new data platform. ? In 2023, OGCI (Oil and Gas Climate Initiative) member companies’ total Scope 1 operated greenhouse gas emissions totalled 575 million tonnes of CO2e — a 19% decrease since 2017.? ? Put in perspective, that reduction is the equivalent to taking 32 million cars off the road for an entire year.? ? Swipe to see how our members are driving down carbon intensity ???

OGCI (Oil and Gas Climate Initiative) welcomes today's IMEO report,?which outlines the progress made in #methane transparency and #mitigation and the work which lies ahead. We share the ambition to achieve #nearzero methane #emissions, and we've expanded our?Satellite Monitoring Campaign?(SMC) as part of ongoing efforts to reduce emissions. The SMC identifies and works with operators across the world to identify and mitigate plumes - converting data into action. We look forward to continuing our partnership with UNEP, promoting greater transparency and collaboration as we work to achieve a #sustainable, #lowemission future.
?? NOW LIVE: Action to #CutMethane is critical for climate progress. Our latest report highlights that the tools are ready, the targets are set – now it’s time to deliver. Human-caused methane emissions are responsible for roughly 1/3 of the planet’s current warming. Reducing these #emissions is the fastest, most cost-effective way to slow global warming in the near-term, avert climate damages and buy valuable time for full decarbonization. ? Rapid innovation, new technologies and global momentum have led to a methane #data revolution with the potential to drive methane mitigation at speed and scale.? ? Released during #COP29, the International Methane Emissions Observatory’s latest “An Eye on #Methane Report: Invisible, but not unseen” takes stock of progress harnessing this data revolution that can #CutMethane and keep global climate goals within reach. https://lnkd.in/dUUkMfGv
