The Integrated Business and Engineering Honors Program has reached it’s 10th birthday ??! So last Friday, IBE alumni, IBE corporate partners and IBE students gathered to celebrate. An afternoon professional development summit led to a celebration dinner at The Ohio Union.?The festivities also included the announcement of the new IBE x Deloitte Scholars & IBE x Sherwin-Williams Scholars. Thanks to generous sponsorship from both companies, 20 IBE students were awarded a $2,500 scholarship each! The College of Engineering and Fisher College of Business jointly offer the multidisciplinary undergraduate IBE honors program where engineering and business students take classes, attack real-world problems and network with industry leaders throughout their undergraduate experience. So very grateful to Minrui (Wally) Yang ('20 OSU CSE) of Meta for joining our last Dig In of 2024, where he shared about his day-to-day responsibilities as a Production Engineer, his path from Ohio State ?? Meta, and how he thinks about his future career there. During his fireside chat with Alex Gulko, we learned: ?? How a production engineer differs from a software engineer ?? The value of specialization on your resume ?? What makes working at Meta so unique ... and so, so much more. At the end of the evening, we asked Wally who helped him build his path. Hear his answer below ??

Corporate efforts to use artificial intelligence in a more socially responsible way have a surprising benefit – they can often improve product quality, according to an Ohio State resesarch survey of company officials around the country. Those surveyed ranked product quality as the area of their businesses that received the most value from implementing responsible AI management (RAIM) practices – even above more obvious choices, such as reducing regulatory and legal risk. That answer was surprising, said one of the leaders of the survey, Computer Science and Engineering Professor Dennis Hirsch, faculty director of The Ohio State University’s?Program on Data Governance. “We did not expect that the primary response for how AI governance would create value would be by improving product quality,” Hirsch said. “That’s very interesting and encouraging.” That result was one of several important findings from the survey, which were revealed in the report?Responsible AI Management: Evolving Practice, Growing Value. The report was produced by the Program on Data and Governance, which is part of Ohio State’s?Moritz College of Law?and?Translational Data Analytics Institute. https://lnkd.in/gnm4Wy7f

Computer Science & Engineering Prof. Suren Byna leads a team of researchers that received a $1.2M NSF grant to correct security deficiencies in self-describing file formats and libraries.? https://lnkd.in/g2vvDKds Self-describing data formats, such as Hierarchical Data Format, version 5 (HDF5) and Network Common Data Form?(netCDF), offer standardized, machine-independent and portable file formats that support flexible, effective organization of large amounts of data. These data formats include descriptive metadata critical for its portability. Several scientific domains—including climate science, accelerator science and particle physics—and industry applications use self-describing formats to store and analyze their data. There are thousands of tools and libraries around HDF5 and netCDF, forming a large ecosystem for facilitating visualization, analysis, and AI training and inference.

A 2023 paper authored by CSE Prof. Xia Ning,?"G2Retro?as a two-step graph generative models for retrosynthesis prediction," is featured in Nature Portfolio's special collection,?"Nobel Prize in Physics 2024." The Nobel Prize was awarded to John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton “for foundational discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks” This collection highlights high-impact research, reviews, and opinion articles selected from all of Nature's participating journals, celebrating “the direct contributions by the awardees and the advances they have inspired.” The paper was co-authored by CSE Assoc. Prof. Huan Sun and PhD candidate Ziqi Chen, Pharmacy Prof. Jim Fuchs & Oluwatosin A.yinde, now an NCI research fellow. According to Ning, the team "introduced a new AI method for generating synthetic pathways for molecules—a step forward in using AI for Science, particularly in Chemistry, following the footsteps of the Nobel Prize awardees."
