On March 24, 1989 the tanker Exxon Valdez struck a coral reef and spilled almost 11 million gallons of oil into Alaska's Prince William Sound, injuring 28 types of animals, plants, and marine habitats. The impacts of the spill are still felt today. ?? TOF's Blue Resilience Initiative has been hard at work on a large-scale mangrove restoration project in the Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve and Aguirre State Forest. This initiative, in partnership with the Puerto Rico Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DNER), aims to repair damage from the 2017 hurricane season and long-term environmental changes due to urban development. At 1,445 acres, it is the largest mangrove restoration project ever undertaken in the United States! ?? The Ocean Foundation’s Blue Resilience Initiative collaborated on a proof-of-concept, led by Coolant, that introduces a new accurate and affordable forest mapping tool, ForestSplat. The study shows how ForestSplat could be used to help with carbon credit-based reforestation projects, conservation, and research. ?? The smallest amongst us are doing some of the heaviest lifting, but increased ocean acidity threatens these essential workers. "All told, phytoplankton absorb about as much carbon from the atmosphere as all land plants. When they die, they take a lot of that carbon with them as they sink to the sea floor.
