The only community foundation for the ocean.

关于我们

The Ocean Foundation is the gathering place for marine conservation donors and conservation entrepreneurs to advance global ocean solutions. We work to provide financial resources to marine conservation initiatives by providing conservation grants, hosting projects and funds, and collaborating with important campaigns and opinion leaders. Because of the dynamic nature of our business, including the many projects that we host, we have a variety of powerful resources that we can bring to any ocean conservation project. We have grantees, partners and projects on all the world’s continents. Our Board of Directors is comprised of individuals with significant experience in marine conservation philanthropy, complemented by an expert, professional staff, and a growing international advisory board of scientists, policy makers, educational specialists, and other top experts. Since 2003 we have spent over $84.1 million on marine conservation - through grants and services - to protect marine habitats and species of concern, build the ocean conservation community's capacity and expand ocean literacy.

As the only community?foundation for the ocean, we have always prioritized “unity” in our partnerships and in our work with many different forms of government around the world over more than 20 years. We see every reason to continue our unwavering commitment to our mission to improve ocean health, climate resilience, and the blue economy in the US and worldwide. The needs of the ocean do not shift with political winds. Nor do the needs of coastal communities around the world. Nor even does our collective dependence on the ocean’s life-giving services. We can all continue to work together on the challenges that lie ahead. The Ocean Foundation

Bloomberg, COP 16, and MPAs Exciting news from #COP16! Yesterday, Bloomberg Philanthropies?and a coalition of leading philanthropies announced a groundbreaking $51.7 million pledge to accelerate the creation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the high seas. It’s a significant step towards delivering on the #30x30 ocean protection goal and the most significant private philanthropic investment of its kind! This funding will support international governance processes and rapidly build the capacity to adopt high-seas MPAs under the High Seas Treaty. With less than 2% of the high seas currently protected, this initiative is crucial for preserving ocean biodiversity and mitigating climate change. All of us at The Ocean Foundation are glad to be working with these great partner organizations to turn ambition into action on marine conservation.

Experts needed! Our friends Lloyd's Register Foundation and the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI) are requesting research, evidence, and case studies on Nature-positive Engineering (NPE) in action. The focus of the review will center on coastal and marine environments, with deep dives into: Coastal protection and adaptation (particularly for coastal communities, e.g., cities, towns, and small island development states) Offshore renewable energy (ORE) Ports and shipping. Your contributions will inform a Foresight Review into safe practice in this field, helping provide a framework to ensure future approaches to engineering help protect, restore, and enhance natural ecosystems. They are requesting: - Challenges, priority gaps, and opportunities to scale up NPE implementation - Examples of NPE approaches and projects from around the world - Existing research and innovation, resources, and initiatives? - Skills and education needed to mainstream NPE - Relevant stakeholders and organizations to engage with Please fill out the following call for input:?https://loom.ly/-z5Wnko LinkedIn:?https://lnkd.in/e2DqHHUq x:?https://lnkd.in/e-y2GJsR

OCTOBER 30, 2024 80 percent of Americans care about sustainable seafood, food security, ocean? Ned Daly, Environment & Sustainability Photo courtesy of Creative HRI doy/Shutterstock A new poll has found that most Americans care about sustainably produced seafood, food security, and protection of the world’s oceans. The poll, released by the Walton Family Foundation (WFF) – a Bentonville, Arkansas, U.S.A.-based philanthropic organization established by Walmart founders Sam and Helen Walton – in honor of National Seafood Month, found that more than four out of five Americans agree that it is important to promote the production of sustainable seafood. "From Middle America to the coasts, choosing sustainable seafood that prioritizes ocean health will help foster healthy communities and a healthy planet," WFF Environment Program Director Moira McDonald said. A total of 84 percent of adults surveyed said they believe it is important to "promote sustainable seafood and protect the health of fish in oceans" because 3 billion people worldwide rely on seafood as their primary source of protein. The polling also accounted for political affiliation and found agreement across party lines, with 82 percent of Republicans, 92 percent of Democrats, and 78 percent of independents agreeing on the same statement. The poll also looked at reasons driving this concern for continued availability of seafood and ocean health more broadly. Large majorities said they believe in the importance of food security in America (85 percent), the health of the oceans (83 percent), and the ability of the oceans to provide fish and seafood (80 percent). "The ocean plays a critical part in our food security, and this poll shows that Americans understand that connection. People increasingly understand that taking care of nature is the key to taking care of people and communities, too. Sustainable seafood is a great example of that mindset put into action," McDonald said. When it came to the role the government plays in protecting seafood supply and the oceans, around half of all respondents (51 percent) think the U.S. government is not doing enough to protect the health of fish in oceans. This issue was also broken down based on political affiliation with concern crossing party lines. Democrats (56 percent) are more likely than Republicans (47 percent) and independents (49 percent) to think the government is not currently doing enough. Protecting rivers and oceans and the communities they support is one of three areas the WWF focuses on in its work, along with improving education and investing in the family’s home region of Northwest Arkansas and the Arkansas-Mississippi Delta. “Choosing sustainable seafood considers the balance between protecting the ocean ecosystem and producing the food needed for a growing population. This polling illustrates that Americans want to choose ocean-friendly practices so nature and people can thrive together,” the foundation said.

I am thrilled to share that I will speak today to The Fletcher School at Tufts University students about ocean law and diplomacy, representing The Ocean Foundation. This is a wonderful opportunity to discuss important topics with future leaders in this field!
