The October is out and will be arriving to your mailboxes soon! Production for this month’s issue comes on the heels of the 2024 Paralympics, which was the impetus for its theme of Keeping Patients Active. For some O&P patients, pursuing athletics is certainly their aim. But for many, the goals are less lofty but no less important—taking their dogs for a walk, attending events with their families, going to dinner with friends—all part of keeping active. So in addition to recapping the performances of a few Paralympic athletes, in this issue we bring you insights into strategies to improve patient compliance for better outcomes and keeping knee osteoarthritis patients moving with conservative orthotic interventions. @paralympics #osteoarthritis #Paralympicathletes #competition #prosthetics #orthotics #ParalympicGames #oandp #motivation #

Part of a continuing series... For every new prosthesis user, there’s someone who came before, someone who can share what they've learned in the process. Take Tracy Lalone from Flushing, Michigan, who has a transfemoral amputation of her left leg. Tracy was riding her motorcycle on her way to work on October 8, 2018, when she was hit by a car who didn’t see her bike in the middle of the intersection. She lost her ankle at the scene of the accident and had to be treated continually for infection once she was in the hospital and her recovery began. Tracy says her journey has been difficult but made easier because of the constant and continual support she has received from her parents, family, prosthetist, who has been with her “since day one,” and her physical and occupational therapists. “No matter how bad it is, there’s always a way. You don’t know how much strength you have until you’re faced with life-threatening trauma. I wouldn’t say that it gets easier, but it does get better,” Tracy says in this video from Perry Prosthetics in Ohio. #amputee #amputeelife #amputeestrong #amputeelifestyle #perryprosthetics

When a man in an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs walked into the room to discuss the power of choice when it comes to life and business, the audience listened. Chuck Gallagher gave the presentation, Every Choice has a consequence--Ethics, Integrity, and the Power of Choices in Life and Business, during the AOPA National Convention in Charlotte on Friday. If you think it was just a prop to get the audience's attention, it wasn't. In the middle of a rising career, Gallagher lost everything after making bad choices in business. He was incarcerated, released and has since successfully rebuilt his career and his life. With more vulnerability than the average keynote,?Gallagher shared his life's journey, the consequences of his unethical choices, and how life can give anyone a second chance when the right choices are made. #AOPA2024 #WeAreOandP #Ignite #oandp #ethics #choices #life #business #integrity

#sponsored Are you or your patients facing the challenges of ACL injuries?? We understand how difficult the journey to recovery can be. That’s why we’re excited to introduce the Provoke? Knee Brace by OssKin—a groundbreaking solution designed to make that journey smoother and more effective. Using cutting-edge scan-to-print technology, the Provoke? Knee Brace?is custom-fit to each patient’s unique anatomy, providing the precision and comfort that traditional braces just can’t match. This 3D-printed brace is more than just a supportive device; it’s a partner in recovery, tailored to meet the specific needs of every individual. What sets the Provoke? apart?? ??Natural Movement with Asymmotion? Hinge Our innovative Asymmotion? hinge system?allows for natural, three-dimensional knee movement, closely mimicking the knee’s true biomechanics. This hinge tracks the knee’s instantaneous axis of rotation, reducing counterforces, preventing brace migration, and maintaining proper gait mechanics—all crucial for a successful recovery. ??Unparalleled Comfort and Compliance At just 10.5 oz, the Provoke? is the lightest ACL brace available—40% lighter?than any other double-upright hinged rigid knee brace on the market. Its lightweight design, combined with a precise and snug fit, means patients can wear it comfortably for extended periods, enhancing compliance and improving recovery outcomes. ??Advanced Protection, Enhanced Healing OssKin’s engineering expertise has created a brace that not only protects but actively enhances the healing process. By limiting end-range motion across all three planes, the Provoke? brace reduces stress on healing ligaments, lowering the risk of re-injury. Whether you’re treating athletes or active individuals, the Provoke? Knee Brace is the new gold standard in ACL care. Curious to learn more?
