It’s been 32 years since the U.S. conducted an explosive nuclear test. Resuming testing would be unnecessary, dangerous and harmful to U.S. national security. That's why NTI has joined Nevadans Against Nuclear Testing, a coalition representing Nevada business leaders, environmental and community groups, and elected officials to voice strong opposition to growing calls to resume explosive nuclear weapons testing in Nevada. #NoNukeTests Learn more ?? https://buff.ly/4dZSkrs

Accidents happen(ed). In 1970, a U.S. underground nuclear test accidentally vented radioactive material across the western United States. The risk of explosive nuclear weapons testing too great. Nevada is already considered one of the most radioactively contaminated places in the world. A resumption of explosive nuclear weapons testing in Nevada, as some former government officials have called for, would risk the health & safety of Nevadans and undermine U.S. national security. #NoNukeTests Learn more about Nevadans Against Nuclear Testing ?? https://buff.ly/4dZSkrs

At a time of increased US-China tensions, this is a welcome development. Maintaining regular channels of mil-to-mil dialogue is essential to increasing mutual understanding & avoiding incidents or miscalculation that could lead to conflict. With China rapidly expanding its nuclear arsenal, the United States modernizing its nuclear forces, and the global arms control and nonproliferation architecture under duress, sustained and constructive dialogue to reduce nuclear risks and enhance stability is more necessary than ever.

At a time of heightened global tensions, some former government officials have proposed that the US should resume explosive nuclear weapons testing. Jasmine Owens explains why this is "exactly the wrong response to today’s escalating nuclear threats." Read her article for Atomic Pulse to learn about the history of nuclear testing, the CTBT and the International Day Against Nuclear Tests.

At a time of heightened global tensions, when a handful of leaders with only a few minutes of decision time could determine the world’s fate, the next US president must prioritize nuclear risk reduction. Faster, more powerful delivery systems and new technologies, including cyber and artificial intelligence, are increasing the risk of nuclear blunders. NTI's Steven Andreasen explains why a global nuclear failsafe is our best bet for preventing catastrophe.

New in Arms Control Today: NTI's Lynn Rusten explains why preventing a resumption of nuclear testing remains in the best interest of the U.S. and the world. "The next president should recognize the national security benefits of upholding the U.S. moratorium on explosive nuclear testing and encouraging all nuclear-armed states to maintain their moratoriums on nuclear testing."
