Kathy retired this past summer as Chairperson of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) after 50 years of service to her country, spending most of her life immersed in aviation. My heart goes out to the crew of Delta 4819, and their families and friends. While social media networks like this can offer comfort and support, I hate to see it when anyone uses any social media platform to disseminate misinformation or rush to judgement before the facts are known and confirmed. I am the immediate past Chair (retired last August ) of the the TSB Canada, the independent federal agency leading the investigation into this accident. I have absolute confidence that the TSB investigators will conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to identify all of the causal and contributing factors that led to this occurrence. Accidents are always the result of multiple factors that converge. Unlike the U.S. (and this is not intended as a criticism), Canadian legislation does not require the TSB to boil it down to a ‘probable cause’ statement. I have often stated publicly to the media that, if you remove any one of the causal and contributing factors, the occurrence may not have happened. Please be patient and follow the progress of the investigation on the TSB website www.tsb.gc.ca - A25O0021. And one more thing, I know that being a female pilot is tough in this political climate. But I am reminded of something we all learned in our basic flight training - “Attitude plus power equals performance.” I think that translates well in this political climate. So hold your head high, wear your uniform proudly, knowing you earned your place on the flight deck and are every bit as qualified as your male counterparts. We have come too far to let them push us to the back of the aircraft.
