A startup think tank created for—and by—the next generation of policy leaders.

关于我们

Policymaking should be driven by those with the most at stake in our policy decisions. Next100 is trying to make that happen. Next100 is a startup think tank created for—and by—the next generation of policy leaders. We envision a future in which the policy space is inclusive of and driven by a diverse set of the next generation’s thinkers and doers, who are developing creative, rigorous, and relevant policy ideas, with a focus on translating these ideas into tangible change. We're changing the face and future of progressive policy.

?? Permanent housing pathways for asylum seekers are scarce and confusing. Rudrani Ghosh outlines the housing challenges faced by asylum seekers and what NYC can do to support ALL New Yorkers. She writes, “increasing the housing supply and expanding asylum seekers’ access to it will benefit all New Yorkers by increasing housing options for voucher holders, lessening the time people experiencing homelessness have to wait to be matched with permanent housing, and decreasing the rental costs in the housing market overall.” ?? In fact, last year, out of the estimated 25,604 asylum seeker households to be residing in temporary shelters, choosing to permanently house them using CityFHEPS vouchers, alone, would have saved the city nearly $3 billion annually. Our new survey from Next100 and GenForward shows that the majority of young adults don’t believe democracy is working well, and their faith in its potential is mixed—especially among marginalized communities. With election season in full swing, political leaders must see young people not just as voters, but as key stakeholders in the future of our democracy. Addressing their concerns and rebuilding trust is essential. https://bit.ly/46PuBr8

Young adults are losing hope in democracy, and checking out of a political system that doesn't represent them or meet their needs. Regaining their trust will require economic and political reform. According to our new survey with GenForward : ?? By almost a two-to-one margin, young adults don’t think the two-party system is working ?? Just 27 percent of young adults consider themselves politically active ?? 15 percent of young adults think federal leaders can relate to the challenges their communities face Learn more about our survey results from Next100 Deputy Director Tabitha Decker, Chantal Hinds, Cathy Cohen, and Kumar Ramanthan: https://lnkd.in/dgCsD9YB

    • "Less than 1 in 4 young adults say they trust the federal government. It's time for our leaders listened to the next generation." Learn more at next100.org. Illustrations of "I Voted" stickers with tears in them.

???? Empowering NY students with climate education means preparing them for real-world challenges. ???? Thankfully, Next100’s own kier blake, developed a model called critical climate change education (CCCE) AND a how-to on teaching it in schools to bridge this gap! “School is not a preparation for life, it is life. If we are not preparing students for life, we’ll keep saying, ‘Oh, they’re too young,’ all the way until they are up out of high school. And, by then, we’d have deprived them of the very skills we demand they develop on their own when we’ve never provided the pathways to build up agency.” —Trudi L. Volk as quoted in the piece ???? ? NEW PIECE OUT (2 of 3) ? Last week I published my SECOND article in a larger #ClimateChangeEducation toolkit I am developing under Next100 offering a framework I will continue to build in my time here around teaching climate education in order to prep our youth for the world as is/to come, not a world of science fiction. ???? Discover a simple guide on implementing Critical Climate Change Education (CCCE) in your classroom to transform lives and empower the next generation: https://lnkd.in/gdjuQU4u This piece is near and dear to my hear because it is the result of so many hands: ?? The team at Start:Empowerment who allowed me to experiment and bring on new and innovative projects to test my theories of change, especially at High School for Teaching and The Professions with VP Alvin Simpson, ?? Tishman Environment and Design Center for awarding me the 2022-23 Aronson Fellowship to fund my preliminary research work with Mike Harrington, LEED GA, ?? The The New School's Milano School Environmental Policy program’s Leonardo Figueroa Helland and Pratik Raghu for continually encouraging me to see the worth I bring to this work and never ceasing to support me and my ideas as a Research & Programs Assistant, and ?? Hailey Walsh at The Century Foundation for helping me visualize my abstractions into the piece’s illustrations? 5 years in the making, y’all!! Have you heard??? The Supreme Court is right about one thing: its decision in Grants Pass v. Johnson does not actually address or resolve homelessness—because it is not designed to. Earlier this week, Sofie Fashana and Rudrani Ghosh, published a piece on what New York City can do to proactively address homelessness, rather than criminalizing our youth and asylum seekers on things right here in NYC like: ?? Criminalizing sleeping outdoors despite having a Homeless Bill of Rights (2023) ?? Penalizing the largely Black (56%) and Latine (32%) persons that make up the NYC homeless population ?? Putting the 119,320 public school students who are homeless further at risk If you haven’t read it yet, don’t wait ?? https://lnkd.in/gC7dabx5 #Homelessness #NYC #Youth #AsylumSeekers

?? It's time for our government to prioritize justice by reforming economic regulations and promoting racial equity because justice demands economic reforms that level the playing field for all, not just the wealthy few. In our Policy Entrepreneur's Nia Johnson's latest piece, she draws on the firsthand experiences of Black women, including her own, who have dealt closely with corporate greed to explain why racial equity should be central to regulating predatory corporate practices. "The loss of my grandmother's retirement savings meant that her children and grandchildren would spend over two decades recovering from financial distress and still struggle to cover basic expenses.” ??Government policies should uplift, not undercut. ?? ?? It is high time the conversation around corporate regulation centers racial equity Read more here: https://lnkd.in/geCeCF3r #WallStreetLooting #Antitrust #MergerReview

As wealth has grown increasingly concentrated, the racial wealth gap has expanded and even peaked at $240,120 in 2022. This is no coincidence. Corporate greed fueled by biased economic policy has left far too many behind. In the process, the path to upward mobility has been obstructed for communities of color. It's time for our government to prioritize justice by reforming economic regulations and promoting racial equity. ?#PeopleOverProfits #RacismIsProfitable #RacialEconomicJustice #CorporateGreed #CorporateAccountability #PrivateWealth

?? Did you know? 20% of NYC foster youth end up in shelters within 6 years of leaving care. At Next100, Cheyanne Deopersaud is developing innovative, sustainable solutions that address the root causes of housing instability among youth in, and transitioning out of, the foster care system. "While it’s true that urban centers like New York City are grappling with widespread housing crises affecting countless residents across various demographics, the situation of youth exiting the foster care system is distinct,” she says. “...youth who have had experience in the child welfare system…[lack] family support and [are] often without a safety net, …[without] the luxury of fallback options. Their placement in substandard housing is not just a matter of market failure, but a policy failure of the system that’s supposed to act as their guardian.” We must do better to provide stable, supportive housing for these young adults. ???? Imagine facing roaches, rodents, cold showers, and stolen packages instead of a welcoming home. This was my reality at 19 years old in city-provided housing. Thousands of foster youth face similar struggles daily. "Expecting foster youth to be grateful for any form of housing, no matter how substandard, undermines their dignity and well-being.” In my first piece for Next100, I share my firsthand experience seeking supportive housing in NYC? and call for increased investment to ensure that all former foster youth can live in safe, dignified and nurturing environments.
