Policy Entrepreneur Nia Johnson and policy partner Latinas Contra Cancer are on a mission to advance health care equity and accessibility in East San Jose. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Next100 and Nia Johnson are proud to support Latinas Contra Cancer (LCC)'s fundraiser to provide financial relief to cancer patients dealing with unexpected medical expenses. In addition to the statistics (pictured) related to #Latina #women and #WomenofColor, especially #Black women, have higher chances of being diagnosed with breast cancer at younger ages and later stages, which leads to higher death rates. In Nia's home state, California is expected to see: ?? 32,660 new cases of breast cancer ?? 4,570 breast cancer deaths in 2024 which may further exacerbate the existing racial health disparities ???? As profit-driven companies further expand into cancer treatment centers to boost their bottom line, we must strive to keep life-saving services affordable and accessible for the patients who need it most.????? Together, LCC and Nia are working to shape the narrative around racial equity and corporate accountability in health care. Donations are accepted year-round and every contribution makes a difference. Let's raise awareness and support those in need during this crucial time. #BreastCancerAwareness #HealthEquity #DonateNow #EastSanJose

A startup think tank created for—and by—the next generation of policy leaders.
关于我们
Policymaking should be driven by those with the most at stake in our policy decisions. Next100 is trying to make that happen. Next100 is a startup think tank created for—and by—the next generation of policy leaders. We envision a future in which the policy space is inclusive of and driven by a diverse set of the next generation’s thinkers and doers, who are developing creative, rigorous, and relevant policy ideas, with a focus on translating these ideas into tangible change. We're changing the face and future of progressive policy.

Did you know that in Maryland, some children as young as 14 are automatically sent to adult court? Next100's Derrell Frazier recently testified before the Maryland State Legislature to advocate for eliminating the automatic charging of children as adults. "The automatic charging system fuels these racial inequities and perpetuates harmful, outdated 'tough-on-crime' policies that have failed to improve public safety. It is time for Maryland to align with evidence-based practices that prioritize rehabilitation and fairness over outdated punitive measures." Full remarks ?? https://lnkd.in/eM76H5sP

For far too long, agencies serving foster youth have forced them to resort to using garbage bags when moving to new housing. For one Policy Entrepreneur (PE), it’s an unnecessary practice that sends a damaging message, implying that these children are disposable. As a Next100 PE and a former foster youth herself, Sofie Fashana successfully helped end this practice in Oregon, her home state. Now, she’s working on legislation in New York to ensure foster youth receive real luggage—because every child deserves to carry their belongings with dignity. Learn more about her work: https://lnkd.in/e2YB9n4R
Two bills in New York aim to end the practice of giving foster youth trash bags for their belongings, proposing each foster child receive their own luggage. The bills are part of a nationwide push to abolish policies critics say humiliate foster youth and undermine their dignity.

?? Spooky season may be done but the chilling disparities in supportive housing for foster youth who age out of the system remain. ?? Earlier this week, Policy Entrepreneur, Cheyanne Deopersaud, shared her first report, “Trapped in Transition: The State of Supportive Housing for Former Foster Youth in New York City.” ? This report is the *FIRST* NYC supportive housing report *centering* youth voices from foster care!! …and…. ? Over 60 NYC youth have spoken about the reality they faced living in the housing that was supposed to be a safety net (but wasn’t) when they aged out of the system. "I shouldn’t have to feel unsafe or feel like I’m less than just because I’m in affordable housing.” "They put us in survival mode. They made us feel like we weren’t a demographic that was cared about.” “My caseworker told me I need to start living in the real world….” “The staff made me feel invisible, inferior, the staff made me feel small...” Are just some of the grievances aired by interviewees. ?? ?? We are thrilled to highlight and celebrate Policy Entrepreneur Derrell Frazier for his successful completion of the prestigious Leading with Conviction (LwC) program, hosted by JustLeadershipUSA. ?? On Monday, October 21, 2024, Derrell graduated alongside his fellow cohort members after a transformative experience that spanned both virtual and in-person engagements. Leading with Conviction is a rigorous training initiative designed to empower leaders with direct justice system involvement to become champions of criminal justice reform in their communities. And Next100 is so proud of Derrell Frazier for all of his accomplishments in his unwavering advocate for justice-impacted young people and emerging adults. #CriminalJusticeReform #JustLeadershipUSA #LeadingWithConviction #LwC #DerrellFrazier

?? Permanent housing pathways for asylum seekers are scarce and confusing. Rudrani Ghosh outlines the housing challenges faced by asylum seekers and what NYC can do to support ALL New Yorkers. She writes, “increasing the housing supply and expanding asylum seekers’ access to it will benefit all New Yorkers by increasing housing options for voucher holders, lessening the time people experiencing homelessness have to wait to be matched with permanent housing, and decreasing the rental costs in the housing market overall.” ?? In fact, last year, out of the estimated 25,604 asylum seeker households to be residing in temporary shelters, choosing to permanently house them using CityFHEPS vouchers, alone, would have saved the city nearly $3 billion annually. Our new survey from Next100 and GenForward shows that the majority of young adults don’t believe democracy is working well, and their faith in its potential is mixed—especially among marginalized communities. With election season in full swing, political leaders must see young people not just as voters, but as key stakeholders in the future of our democracy. Addressing their concerns and rebuilding trust is essential. https://bit.ly/46PuBr8
