College Tour Season: Ask the Right Questions, Find Your Perfect Fit! College tours are a crucial part of the college application journey, but getting the real picture can be tricky. As a first and second-generation college navigator, I've seen students fall into the trap of generic tours and miss critical information. So, let me help you ask the questions that matter! ASK YOUR COLLEGE TOUR GUIDE: 1) How easy is it to register for classes, especially in your desired major? Can you get into the courses you need, or are waitlists a constant struggle? *Remember, not being able to access key classes can derail your academic progress. 2) Have you used the career services here? Did you find it helpful in securing internships, job opportunities, or giving career guidance? *A robust career center can be a game-changer for your future success. College isn't just about academics; it's about preparing for your future career. 3) Ask about the quality of their academic advising? Is there are a lot of turnover? Are they full time? *Research from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) “each time a first-generation college student meets with their academic advisor the study showed that the odds of a student staying in college increased 13%” 4) Are classes primarily taught by professors or teaching assistants? *While TAs can be valuable resources, direct access to experienced professors can make a big difference. Class size and teaching style can significantly impact your learning experience. 5) Do you feel safe walking alone on campus and in surrounding areas, especially at night? *Understanding the campus environment and surrounding community is crucial for your well-being. 6) If you could change one thing about this school, what would it be? *This question often reveals hidden gems or challenges not mentioned in the official narrative. Share the Knowledge! What are your favorite college tour questions? Add them to the comments and help other first-generation/second-generation students ask the right questions!
