关于我们
NAL is leading a movement fighting for inclusive democracy by equipping immigrants, refugees, and their allies with the tools they need to realize their potential by running for and holding elected office; as well as engaging in civic action that brings their voices to the forefront of American politics. We uplift New Americans — anyone who identifies closely with the immigrant experience — by tackling equity in representation. We believe that our democracy is stronger when everyone can participate. Unfortunately, our elected government, from city council to Congress, does not reflect our country’s diverse population. By galvanizing and investing in New Americans, we work to achieve an inclusive democracy that benefits from the insight, potential, and power of our newest citizens and their allies. NAL is the only national, nonpartisan organization focused on bringing New Americans into the political process. We accomplish our goals by: ? Training and inspiring immigrants, refugees, and their allies to engage in our democracy. ? Building partnerships and coalitions among New American elected officials so they can advance more inclusive policies from state to state. ? Researching solutions to create a more inclusive democracy where every American is represented. ? Honoring the contributions of outstanding New American elected officials. In recognition of other underrepresented communities, we also collaborate with like-minded organizations that raise political voices in the Native American and African American communities. Ultimately, our fight is focused on changing our leadership to fight for all Americans. We believe that when the diversity of our elected officials reflects the diversity our nation, we will achieve the ideal form of government: an inclusive democracy of the people, by the people, and for the people.

Since 2010, we’ve trained passionate changemakers like Ramiro to become the best leaders they can be. Our nationwide movement is powered by heart and an unwavering commitment to creating a democracy that works for all of us. ?? Want to get involved? Learn more about our trainings at bit.ly/NAL2025!?
Earlier this month, I attended the New American Leaders's Ready to Lead training, and it left me feeling both invigorated and grounded in a sense of community. I’ve long been vocal about how the people making policy decisions—both elected officials and the staffers behind the scenes—do not always reflect the communities they serve. Some voices, some experiences, are missing from the rooms where policies that impact them are decided. When I was a staffer in the Michigan House of Representatives, I was just one of two Latino staffers. That matters. Since 2013, Michigan’s Hispanic population has grown at a faster rate than the national average, yet the demographics in Lansing politics—where decisions that directly affect Latino communities are made—do not reflect this reality. This training was a reminder that I’m not alone in wanting to change that. Hearing people’s stories—about how they got into politics, what drove them, and the challenges they’ve faced—was powerful. It made me reflect on my own path, but more than anything, it reinforced something I already knew: we need more people at the table. That’s exactly what NAL is working to change. It is the only national, nonpartisan organization dedicated to empowering first- and second-generation immigrants and refugees to step into political leadership—whether by running for office, working in government, or engaging in civic action. Their mission is rooted in the belief that our democracy is stronger when it reflects the full diversity of the people it serves. A special thank you to Yasmeen Kadouh for your efforts in organizing this, Senator Darrin Quiroz Camilleri for your continuous mentorship through the years from starting when I was just an intern at the house, Senator Stephanie Chang for your continuous commitment to community, and Dipita D. for nominating me for this program. Leaving this training, I feel more motivated than ever to keep pushing for better representation in government—because the people shaping policy should reflect the communities those policies impact.
