Growing Together: Gardening for Food Security Did You Know? The potassium from banana peels can be used to make banana juice to fertilize your plants for a better turnout! The Neighborhood Center of South Lake’s Gardening Class hosted on March 14th, 2025, showed a great turnout- in produce and people! Our neighbors continued to harvest our winter garden- cauliflower, beets, carrots, etc.- and planted peanuts for the spring! In our monthly Gardening Class, led by local Farmer Banks, our neighbors learn to plant, grow, and harvest their own food through our hands-on program. This invaluable knowledge helps our neighbors become self-sufficient in providing their own food, ensuring they can feed themselves and their families no matter the circumstances. Each class is more than just a lesson; it’s a chance to grow, and cultivate a healthier, more sustainable future. Let’s plant the seeds of hope and resilience together. School Break Series 4/4 The Neighborhood Center of South Lake’s School Break Food program levels the nutritional and learning playing fields to ensure all children enjoy their time off and have the opportunity and resources to learn when they return to school. In 2024, The Neighborhood Center of South Lake served 8,242 kids over 14 weeks of school breaks. That means over 80,000 meals were provided to children in need, keeping them nourished so they didn’t fall behind. It’s thanks to our donors, partners, volunteers, and staff that we are able to serve our community’s children in an impactful and lasting way, nourishing the foundation for their future. School Break Series 3/4 The Neighborhood Center of South Lake’s School Break Food program ensures school aged children have access to nutritious and easy to prepare meals and snacks during school breaks of one week or more. We provide 10 meals and 5 snacks per school-aged child for each week of break. Within a year, there are 14 total weeks kids are out of school. That’s a total of 140 meals and 70 snacks for each child, every year! Spring Break- 1 week Summer Break- 10 weeks Thanksgiving Break- 1 week Christmas Break- 2 weeks This year, Spring Break in Lake County lasts from March 10th through the 14th. That’s only 1 week away!
