?????? ABALONE ON THE MOVE Black abalone once filled the rocky crevices of the intertidal areas from Central California to Baja Mexico. But the population of dark, soap dish-sized marine snails with iridescent interior shells dropped to near extinction in the 1980s and ’90s. TNC is now helping this mollusk make a comeback by plucking about 250 healthy adult abalone from recovered populations at TNC’s Santa Cruz Island preserve and translocating them to the Jack and Laura Dangermond Preserve, another TNC property along the Southern California coast where populations are struggling. It’s hard to track abalone in the wild, but scientists estimate that about 80% of the translocated abalone survived. Now scientists want to apply similar techniques to other threatened species as part of a broader effort to re-wild parts of the California coast. ?? Erin Feinblatt

HELP FOR KELP ?? Everyone knows about terrestrial forests, but did you know that there are floating forests hiding beneath ocean waves? ?? Since the 1970s, the ethereal and species-rich kelp forests of Tasmania and Southern Australia have been in serious decline due to climate change and habitat degradation—only about 5% of historical canopy coverage remains in Tasmania. ?? But a new collaboration between The Nature Conservancy, Google, and other partners is using AI-generated maps to reveal the current state of the giant kelp canopy, indicate where to collect samples for a biobank that will preserve the species’ genetic diversity, and direct restoration efforts. ?? Meanwhile, biologists are growing giant kelp in labs, and last year seeded the fastgrowing species at 16 study sites in preparation to ramp up outplanting efforts. Help for kelp is on the way! ?? As #COP29 reaches its midway point, the pressure is now on for countries to switch from discussing what they WANT, to what they're willing to GIVE. It's time for bold action. ?? Read more about the state of play at COP29: https://nature.ly/3OgTxPG
?? COP29 Week 1 Wrap-Up: Where’s the Funding for Nature? Week 1 of COP29 has been marked by slow progress on finance and nature. But there’s hope! Ambitious new NDCs from #Brazil and the #UK showcase leadership and set the stage for bold action. Clare Shakya (The Nature Conservancy), Maria Netto (Institute for Climate and Society), Balkissou Buba (Global Alliance of Territorial Communities), Anne Samante (MPIDO), and Tom Skirrow (Tree Aid) share powerful reflections on the urgent need for increased funding for nature. Their call to action is clear: ?? 25% of financing must reach Indigenous Peoples. ?? Funding for nature must triple by 2030 to meet the 1.5°C target and restore critical ecosystems. With so much at stake, the time for promises has passed. It’s time for bold action. Stay tuned for Week 2?action #WithNature! #COP29 #WithNature #NaturePositive #ClimateAction #NDCs

Many leaders in Congress have never worked on or voted on a Farm Bill. That’s why it’s important to share the human-centered, real stories of farmers, ranchers and forest landowners that have benefitted from this vital legislation. Our Harvesting Hope film series does just that. In his most recent Forbes column, TNC Global Board Chair, Bill Frist, M.D. says that stories like these help lawmakers and others understand why the Farm Bill is so crucial today — not just for our food security and economy, but also for conservation. https://nature.ly/4eBAlXR

We’re at Climate #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan to advocate for the role nature plays in helping solve the climate crisis.? ? Often, most of the airtime nature gets in the media is focused only on its loss. Our Global Managing Director of Climate,?Clare Shakya, and our Climate Policy Advisor,?Ximena Apéstegui, sat down with Reuters to discuss that yes, nature is under threat, but if we support it, it can be one of our most powerful and equitable tools for fighting the #ClimateCrisis. ? Aquaculture isn’t just our the fastest-growing form of food production on the planet—with the right practices and technologies, it can also be one of our most environmentally sustainable. The Blue Revolution Fund—an aquaculture impact investment fund established by Hatch Blue and advised by The Nature Conservancy— is advancing solutions to ensure the rapidly-growing sector benefits people and the planet. After closing at €93 million, BRF will be investing in about 15 aquaculture ventures working to improve ocean health, address the impacts of climate change, and support coastal communities. By delivering both financial and environmental benefits, BRF aims to set a gold standard for sustainable investment practices that can be applied across the sector.

Today, TNC is proud to join local leaders in celebrating NWT: Our Land for the Future, one of the largest Indigenous-led conservation efforts in history. This landmark agreement will provide durable financing to Indigenous governments in the Northwest Territories of Canada, supporting these thriving communities and enabling the stewardship of these lands and waters for generations.?? ? The agreement, led by 22 Indigenous Governments, the governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories, and private donors, is set to unlock US$270 million for the protection and stewardship of 38 million hectares of Northwest Territory lands and waters, an area the size of Japan. It will be one of the largest conservation efforts to utilize the Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) model.??? ? Indigenous peoples have been vital stewards in safeguarding these lands and waters for millennia. With their leadership, this project is set to preserve biodiversity, protect nature, and benefit communities, with commitments for long-term conservation, stewardship, and community economic development goals identified by Indigenous partners who live there.? This project, part of the Enduring Earth partnership, is a testament to “radical collaboration” and the power of scaling up innovative financing models, as well as the transformative impact of Indigenous-led stewardship. We recognize the tireless efforts of Indigenous leaders and their partners and congratulate them on this landmark achievement. ?? BIRD BUDDY After New Jersey's South Cape May Meadows was battered by storms, erosion and more in the 1990s, it It took a colossal effort to restore the dunes that made the landscape a key place for thousands of migrating birds. TNC's Damon Noe, a long-time lands manager, tells in this Q&A how that restoration happened and what he's been doing to try to continue protecting those birds. ?? Hannah Yoon https://nature.ly/3AuXbCx
