The National WWII Museum mourns the loss of WWII veteran, Museum volunteer, and dear friend Robert “Bob” Wolf, who passed away this week at the age of 99. Born in 1925, Wolf joined the US Army in 1943 and was assigned to the intelligence section of Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 383rd Infantry Regiment, 86th Infantry Division. He was deployed to Germany in 1945, participating in the Ruhr Pocket actions of the Central Europe Campaign. Because of his Dutch and German Jewish heritage he spoke German and was often called upon to translate for officers in his unit. Following the German surrender, Wolf and the 86th Infantry Division redeployed to the Pacific where they served on occupation duty. While in the Philippines, Wolf was able to observe the war crimes trials in Manila. Wolf volunteered at the Museum for 22 years, logging more than 6,000 hours of service translating German documents and speaking to visitors and student groups. He is featured in the Museum's interactive Voices from the Front experience, and his oral history can be found at the link. We are grateful for Mr. Wolf's service and friendship, and our thoughts are with his wife, Marie—also a longtime volunteer—and his family. https://bit.ly/40422EW

The National WWII Museum mourns the loss of WWII veteran, longtime Museum volunteer, and dear friend Ralph Hopkins, who recently passed away. Hopkins, a New Orleans native, joined the US Navy at 17 years old after his father signed his enlistment papers. Following training camp, Hopkins was assigned to the USS Louisville (CA-28) where he served as a Seaman Second Class in the deck force. Hopkins participated in the Battle of Okinawa while aboard the Louisville. After the war ended, the Louisville and her escort, the USS Herndon (DD-638), traveled along the Chinese coast, accepting enemy surrenders and identifying minefields. Hopkins and his ship later served in Operation Magic Carpet, which brought thousands of troops back to the United States from the Pacific. We are grateful for Mr. Hopkins's service and friendship, and our thoughts are with his family.
