The National WWII Museum mourns the loss of WWII veteran, Museum volunteer, and dear friend Robert “Bob” Wolf, who passed away this week at the age of 99. Born in 1925, Wolf joined the US Army in 1943 and was assigned to the intelligence section of Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 383rd Infantry Regiment, 86th Infantry Division. He was deployed to Germany in 1945, participating in the Ruhr Pocket actions of the Central Europe Campaign. Because of his Dutch and German Jewish heritage he spoke German and was often called upon to translate for officers in his unit. Following the German surrender, Wolf and the 86th Infantry Division redeployed to the Pacific where they served on occupation duty. While in the Philippines, Wolf was able to observe the war crimes trials in Manila. Wolf volunteered at the Museum for 22 years, logging more than 6,000 hours of service translating German documents and speaking to visitors and student groups. He is featured in the Museum's interactive Voices from the Front experience, and his oral history can be found at the link. We are grateful for Mr. Wolf's service and friendship, and our thoughts are with his wife, Marie—also a longtime volunteer—and his family. https://bit.ly/40422EW

In the summer of 1944, 63 incarcerated Japanese American men—all members of the Heart Mountain Fair Play Committee—were convicted in federal court of violating the Selective Service Act after refusing to participate in the draft. Join Assistant Curator Brandon Daake on October 22 as he discusses the group’s efforts to challenge the military conscription and incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II as well as their postwar movement to secure redress and reparations for camp survivors.
