What exactly is “asynchronous communication”? That is our preferred method of collaboration at The Motion State. It’s a method of communication where participants engage with each other at different times rather than in real-time. In the context of collaboration, it means team members can communicate and share information without needing to be present simultaneously. Think of it like a text message vs. a phone call. We offer an initial 30-minute zoom meeting to say hi and address any questions. But once we get going, all project-related communication occurs through our project management apps, Trello and Frame.io. (Don’t worry, if you ever want to talk, I will pick up the phone.) But this approach eliminates the need for traditional meetings and allows for a flexible engagement. We provide regular progress updates, ensuring transparency and keeping you informed throughout the process. Embracing asynchronous communication not only enhances efficiency and productivity but also gives you the freedom to work on your schedule, without being tied to fixed meeting times. In motion design, success isn’t just about what we create—it’s about how we create it. Here at The Motion State, we know that client collaboration is about fostering a seamless workflow from inception to completion. By establishing a cohesive visual language upfront, we lay the foundation that guides every subsequent decision. Here’s a glimpse into our process to establishing that language— Before diving into script details, we kickstart projects with “Style Frames”. These are static designs that represent a potential frame of a scene. They are there to serve as visual anchors, capturing the essence of the project’s aesthetic direction. What we really want to do at this stage is establish a pattern and when it comes to establishing a pattern, 1 won’t, 2 might, but 3 will. Usually 3-5 designed frames are enough to show a variety of looks. We might show for example: Type on screen Type with graphics Just graphics Type, graphics and photography If we plan on including any or all of those in the final piece, we’ll want to show what all of those look like so there are no surprises when we get into storyboards. Once we all agree on the visual language for the piece, we dissect the script, assigning and designing visuals for each scene and develop a cohesive set of storyboards. As we progress through storyboarding and animation, the stakes rise. Changes become progressively more challenging—and costly—to implement.
