During intake, there are likely a number of reasons why your firm can’t take on a case: It could be out of your jurisdiction, the liability is unclear, the case details were poorly communicated, or any number of other roadblocks. But just because a case isn’t right for your firm doesn’t mean it’s not worth pursuing. Referrals offer a unique opportunity to assist a client, even if you don’t have the capacity to take their case on. In some cases, it could mean leaving millions of dollars on the table for them — and passing up a significant referral fee for your firm. In 2022, we took a case to trial that had been turned down by other attorneys and secured a $7.1 million verdict against Home Depot. A referral fee for a case like this could have been close to seven figures. Here’s a pro-tip:?Cross-screen your cases for hidden potential. Cross-screening allows you to discover potential additional cases across different case types. For instance, an auto injury case could also be a product liability, workers’ compensation, or disability case. By diving deeper into all the parties liable for the injury, you can achieve better-than-expected outcomes for your clients. Remember, referrals aren’t a handoff, they’re an opportunity.
