Building our next generation of equity-driven school mental health leaders.

关于我们

The MOMENTUM Residency is a 2-year professional development program designed to prepare school clinicians to provide high-quality, culturally nuanced, integrated mental health and wellness services in a K-12 school setting. With this focus, our residents receive a comprehensive clinical experience in school mental health while engaging in quarterly learning sessions that examine health disparities in communities of color and provide strategies to mitigate the care-gap in mental health and wellness services experienced across BIPOC communities. The residency offers individual and group clinical supervision, professional mentorship, and quarterly learning sessions that combine cohort team building, didactic training, and both practical and experiential exercises. Our curriculum combines training in prevention, early intervention, and treatment in a school setting and includes a focus on the use of data to improve practice. Through the lens of health equity, we develop clinicians to work collaboratively in schools with a multidisciplinary group of colleagues. The residency uses a cohort model to provide clinicians with the resources and supports needed to create long-term sustainability in school-based work. Our program includes topics designed to build relational competencies that aid clinician longevity.

We’re still on a high from the MOMENTUM Residency launch event, and we’re grateful for everyone who joined to make it a success! Hearing testimonials and celebrating our talented youth poets reaffirmed our commitment to developing resilient leaders in school-based mental health. A highlight of the evening was listening to Christopher Bonner, a Cohort 1 Resident, speak about his journey. He shared how MOMENTUM has been a “bridge” from Howard University of Social Work, providing him with the confidence to pursue his calling in mental health. As we move forward, we’re excited to expand our reach by opening applications for new school partners and residents. These applications will open soon. If you or someone you know might be interested in supporting or joining our program, we’d love to connect! #SchoolMentalHealth #MOMENTUMResidency #LeadershipDevelopment #MentalHealth #CommunityImpact

We’re thrilled to share some highlights from our MOMENTUM Residency launch party last week! It was a meaningful evening as we introduced our inaugural cohort of residents and connected with an inspiring network of faculty, supporters, and colleagues who share our commitment to equitable, high-quality, and culturally responsive mental health services for DC public school students. Throughout the evening, our Executive Director, residents, and partners spoke passionately about the MOMENTUM Residency’s mission, and we were moved by powerful performances from youth poets from the Sitar Arts Center. Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating this next step toward a stronger, more equitable future for school mental health services in DC. We look forward to sharing our journey with you! #MOMENTUMResidency #MentalHealth #EducationEquity #SchoolMentalHealth #DCNonprofits #CommunityImpact

Solomon Procunier helped MOMENTUM out this week as our summer intern, and we loved having him! Solomon is a Sophomore Honors Psychology Major at Howard University who was born and raised in DC. He does assistant work with photography, file manipulation, digital storage and sorting, as well as general communication and production using the google workspace. He is a fast learner, and even if things don’t immediately make sense he is willing to work at it to gain the competency needed to operate at an effective level. Additionally, he has been developing a burgeoning skill in photography through watching and learning as he assists Satsun Photography’s main photographer. Thanks to Beverlie Lord, who connected MOMENTUM to Solomon!

On the last day of week 1, residents began by examining the 8 dimensions of wellness and applying them to the professional self. From there, the team from GW Milken Institute of Public Health returned to explore the application of public health models in K-12 schools. Residents reflected on restorative practices and community engagement. The close-out Jeopardy game brought out the competitive spirit and a lot of laughing. ? ???????????????? ???? ?????????? ?????? ???????? ???????? ???????? ?????????? ????????????! ?

On day 3, we welcomed GW Milken Institute of Public Health faculty: Dr. Olga Acosta Price, Dr. Mariola Rosser, and Katrina Yi. We dug into the Social Influencers of health and education, root causes of barriers to student achievement, and risk and protective factors in students. Reflection and meditation at the beginning and end of the day supported the long days of thinking and inquiry. Rest and reflection are important to sustaining this work! As one resident stated, “???????????????????? ???????? ?????? ???????????? ????????????????????”.
