A grandparent's relationship with their grandchild can play an important role in combating our epidemic of loneliness. Tune in for more on The Cool Grandpa podcast... #lonelinessepidemic #mentalhealthmatters #podcast
Our teenage #children and #grandchildren are experiencing an epidemic of loneliness. While it might seem that they don't have the time to be lonely due to their busy schedules, the lack of real and meaningful connections creates a sense of being alone that has only grown since about 1976. Gene Beresin MD, MA, from Clay Center for Young Healthy Minds, Massachusetts General Hospital, joins me this week to discuss teen loneliness and what Grandparents can do to help our teenage grandchildren who may be experiencing the effects of loneliness. #TheCoolGrandpaPodcast #MentalHealth #Teenagers #Grandparents #Babyboomers #GenX #GenZ https://lnkd.in/e7cATWXT

Have you heard about the #lonelinessepidemic ? The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has called attention to the public health crisis of loneliness, isolation, and lack of connection in the United States. While loneliness can be part of teen development, the increased rates we’re seeing is more than that. Kids can't do it alone. They need the support and understanding of their parents, mentors, coaches, and teachers. They need space to build relationships, hang out, and be social creatures. It’s important for them to feel that they're making a contribution. Giving releases oxytocin in the brain, which fosters connections between people. In a recent editorial I led in the journal Academic Psychiatry, we noted that psychiatric leadership has fallen short of our ethical and professional obligations in quelling the well established youth mental health epidemic, as noted by the US Surgeon General. In this blog I consider what parents and caregivers can do to defeat this horrifying trend that has significantly predated the COVID pandemic.

They youth mental health crisis, including a critical growth in loneliness that extended far before COVID is endangering our youth, particularly GEN Z. With increases in depression, anxiety, stress, the fallout from loneliness, and suicide, we have a major public health hazard. This piece from the MGH Psychiatry News also covers some previous work I have done.
