We had a great feature in the Orlando Sentinel a little over a month ago taking a deeper look at our latest exhibition, "Sally Michel: Abstracting Tonalism." From the article: A new exhibition at the?Mennello Museum of American Art?recognizes an artist who may have been overlooked during her life but deserves a place in art history. “Sally Michel: Abstracting Tonalism” showcases the work of a painter and illustrator who lived through two world wars and the Great Depression while working as an illustrator and painter who also sought to elevate her husband’s art career. “I think it’s important to tell her story and bring her work to our community. She was largely overlooked during her lifetime,” said Katherine Page, the museum’s curator of art and education. “While she was recognized and had gallery exhibitions and representation in New York City, she really put forth her efforts to have her husband, Milton Avery, be the art world star.” Together, the pair of painters developed what came to be known as the “Avery style,” which involves a flattened spatial pane, figures without faces or landscapes put together with shapes like puzzle pieces and a non-traditional use of color. Thank you Patrick Connolly for your interest and passion in reporting the arts in Central Florida! https://lnkd.in/emzNijvU

The exhibition: “Self-Taught Black Artists in the American South” premiered on January 26 and is on view through May 19, 2024, at the Mennello Museum of American Art in Loch Haven Park, Orlando.? Curator Katherine Page brings a unique and powerful show to the public, masterfully balancing a diversity of artists with a rich media experience threaded together by soulful and sincere storytelling. “Often labeled as self-taught, the artists on display did not have institutionalized academic training and many lived in severe poverty and adverse circumstances that marginalized them from the dominant conversations on American Art. Yet, each has created works of art that widely contribute to a holistic understanding of class, race, expression, and creativity in the United States today.” Featured: Bessie Harvey, American, 1929-1994 “Face of Africa III” Mixed media root sculpture, paint, found objects Collection of the Mennello Museum of American Art, 2003-020-002 Exhibition photos ?
