Today marks the 60th anniversary of Senator Mike Mansfield’s introduction of the Voting Rights Act to the Senate. The Act, which prohibits racial discrimination in voting, was not only one of the most successful statutory changes in federal history but also a remarkable feat of bipartisan statesmanship. Mansfield is pictured here with President Johnson as the bill was signed into law later that year. Photo courtesy of the Mansfield Library Archives & Special Collections.
