While the land of the free prides itself on equality, the reality for black mothers tells a starkly different story. For over two decades, the maternal mortality rate in the US has not just increased, but revealed a harrowing disparity: black women are 2 to 3 times more likely to die in childbirth than white women. The roots of this crisis? Implicit bias and medical racism, fueling higher risks of life-threatening complications, such as preeclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage and blood clots, to name a few. These disparities aren't just numbers, they're a reverberating wake up call for action that's long overdue how many more lives must be lost before we address this blatant inequality that exists in our Nation's healthcare system? What gives, America!?!
