Ocean protected. Lives connected.
关于我们
The mission of The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk is to ignite a connection to Long Island Sound and the ocean to enrich the lives of all people and inspire action to protect our blue planet. For over 35 years, the Aquarium has played a significant role in shaping the landscape of Norwalk and the region. The second largest family attraction in Connecticut, and 50 miles from New York City, the Aquarium hosts nearly 450,000 guests annually. Its primary exhibits take guests on a voyage from the shallow salt marshes and estuaries to the depths of the Long Island Sound and the ocean beyond, culminating with habitats for sharks and harbor seals. Altogether, the Aquarium is home to more than 7,500 animals and 300 species in 75 exhibits. A new 4D Theater offers a unique sensory film experience for guests. Its education programs introduce approximately 80,000 students, campers and scouts to marine and STEM education. The Aquarium is recognized as a top aquarium in the nation, and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. It is an active participant in the local and regional community. The strength of the Aquarium is its 65 full-time staff, and part-time and seasonal staff, in addition to our volunteers.

This month’s volunteer spotlight is Reedie! Reedie started volunteering at the Aquarium in January 2024. As a gallery ambassador, she inspires action to protect our blue planet by teaching our guests about the wonderful animals that live in Long Island Sound and facilitating interactions with them. We’re grateful to have her as part of our team. To learn how to become a volunteer, visit: https://brnw.ch/21wQVmQ

Did you know that salt marshes protect coastal communities from storm damage, remove pollutants from runoff, and store high levels of carbon below ground? The salt marshes that border Long Island Sound are critical to our communities, which is why they are a focus of our conservation work here at the Aquarium. We are actively studying how to improve restoration techniques to increase resiliency, and we are working with partners to maximize our positive impact on the environment. At this moment in time, there are many uncertainties around government support for our work on behalf of the environment and our community. However, we are committed to continuing that work—now is not the time to stop caring. Through this moment and with your continued support, we will provide world-class programs in STEM-education, protect Long Island Sound’s wildlife and habitats, and inspire environmental stewardship. We care deeply about this. And we bet you do too. Support Our Mission: https://lnkd.in/gKk-pfvY

We are pleased to share our Fiscal Year 2024 Impact Report, which highlights how we are bringing to life our new strategic plan, An Aquarium Without Walls. The year brought so many pivotal moments, including the exciting debut of our new Atlantic sturgeon touch tank and the opening of our immersive, interactive, and fully bilingual exhibit, Life Among the Grasses. We also welcomed unique new species, engaged our youngest generation of ocean stewards through innovative STEM programming, expanded our conservation initiatives and partnerships, and continued to work to ensure an inclusive, diverse, and accessible environment for all our guests, staff, and volunteers.
