As we count down to Giving Tuesday on December 3, we're excited to share how your support helps advance our mission of connecting people to the world's waters. This year, all donations made on Giving Tuesday will go directly toward preserving the beauty and purpose of Mariners' Park, our one-of-a-kind natural space that is open to the public year-round. This space offers a welcoming environment for all - from the smallest mariners enjoying active play to students and teachers throughout the region exploring environmental stewardship. We hope you'll consider contributing this year to help sustain this inspiring and free community resource for generations to come! The Mariners’ Museum and Park connects people to the world’s waters, because through the waters we are connected to one another. Come find your connection today. The Museum is filled with fascinating stories, captured in priceless artifacts that celebrate the spirit of the open sea. Designated by Congress as America’s National Maritime Museum, The Mariners’ Museum is one of the largest and most comprehensive maritime museums in the world. Through the stories told in the Museum’s world-class collection, guests are encouraged to explore their own history and discover their story to see how we are all connected to the water. Discover the USS Monitor Center, home to the Civil War ironclad’s iconic gun turret. Explore small craft from around the world in the International Small Craft Center. Discover the fascinating and intricate miniature ship models of Winnifred & August F. Crabtree. Learn about the Age of Exploration and the history of the U.S. Navy. See Oracle Team USA’s 72-foot catamaran. The Museum is located within the 550-acre Mariners' Park, privately owned and maintained as a community resource, open to the public year at no cost. In Mariners' Park, guests can enjoy seasonal kayak rentals on our 167-acre Mariners' Lake, hike the award-winning five-mile Noland Trail or picnic at Lions Bridge overlooking the tranquil James River. The Mariners’ Museum and Park is located off I-64, exit 258-A in Newport News, Virginia, just 20 minutes from Williamsburg. The Museum is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Museum admission is only $1 per person. Special event hours may vary; please call (757) 596-2222 or visit MarinersMuseum.org for special event information.

Last month, Rotary Club volunteers and Mariners' staff rolled up their sleeves and got to work on renovations of the Lil' Mariners' Play Zone! As part of the Discovery Project (which includes a playground, pollinators, and a garden within one unique learning space), these improvements will offer our littlest mariners a functional and safe space to explore. Work continues on the playground, and we're so excited to see this community resource transform through the support of our community partners! *The Discovery Project is made possible through generous funds from the Rotary Club Of Oyster Point (in collaboration with five local clubs) and the Annie Belle Reavis Tuccori Foundation. We would like to take a moment to highlight the completion of the successful Summer Mariners' Lake Programs for the 2024 season! The purpose of our Lake Programs is for all ages to connect with the water and with each other through immersive and nature-based student and adult programs, kayak and rowboat rentals, and collaborations with local community partners. Mariners' Lake Program Manager Kelly Garner, Ed.S led the programs with the Lake Team, providing water safety, environmental literacy skills, and mindfulness exercises to all, with special focus on the upcoming generation of environmental stewards. Although rentals will open again next summer, Mariners' Lake Programs for 6th graders on kayaks will continue throughout the school year. Home to the only accessible kayak launch in Newport News, we are proud to offer a supportive and inclusive environment to our Mariners' community! #iamamariner Image: Senior Science Educator Shantelle Landry guiding students from Achievable Dreams 2024 Summer Camp on kayaks.

It's National Marine Sanctuary Day! Today, we celebrate by looking at some of the ways we’re caring for the treasures the water has given us. Marine sanctuaries hold the keys to the stories that bind us together. By protecting these sanctuaries, we preserve crucial aspects of our shared maritime heritage that could otherwise be lost forever. We’re honored to partner with NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's Monitor National Marine Sanctuary to steward the one-of-a-kind USS Monitor Collection, which is being conserved within the Batten Conservation Complex at The Mariners'. Recently, we finished treating the largest assembly of USS Monitor to complete its treatment to date: the skeg assembly. Here’s a look back at the work our Conservation Team accomplished on this incredible object.

We are so grateful to be awarded a $15,000 grant from Sentara Health to support the Mariners' Lake Stewards Program during the 2024-25 school year! This hands-on program builds awareness and understanding in students and teachers on the effects of human behavior in regards to the health and sustainability of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. "What I love about the Lake Stewards program is that the students are given the power to take action on climate-based solutions in their environment," says Mariners' Senior Science Educator Shantelle Landry. This program builds on the success of the Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) curriculum, which has served over 4,000 students and nearly 70 teachers to date! This award will fund student transportation, supplies, teacher professional development, and staff time. Thank you, Sentara, for your investment in the future environmental stewards of our community! #iamamariner #sentaracares Photo: Students from Denbigh High School planting Eel Grasses in Mariners' Lake under the supervision of Mariners' Senior Science Educator Claudia Moncada in Spring 2024.
