In Tanzania, 27.9% of girls face sexual violence before age 18 — and less than one-third of girls complete secondary school due to factors like teenage pregnancy and child marriage. To tackle these issues, our partner Msichana Initiative takes a multi-faceted approach to girls’ education in rural Tanzania. Some of their work includes: ?? Partnering with community members and officials to reduce stigma towards victims of gender-based violence so that girls can return to classrooms without shame. So far, this program has helped 400 girls in Kongwa and Nzega re-enter school. ?? Providing bicycles to girls who commute long distances — a project that has reduced risks of violence and improved girls' success in school. Now, 62% of thie bike recipients pass key exams and progress in school. ?? One Girl+ program, using card games, fosters self-confidence and goal-setting; over 4,000 girls in 16 schools have participated. "By not supporting survivor-centered response, we become complicit with the system which perpetuates violence for girls." — Msichana Initiative staff Learn more about this great organisation: msichana.or.tz #16DaysOfActivism

At Here I Am Studio, we believe education should be a place of inspiration and optimism, not fear. Malala Fund's The Girls’ Vision for Education consultation revealed how girls dream of an education that allows them to shape their futures, lead their communities, and inspire others. But for too many, the threat of gender-based violence stands in the way of those dreams. We’re honoured to have played a role in amplifying girls' voices through this consultation and want to thank every girl who courageously shared their experiences. This #16DaysOfActivism, we’re proud to join with Malala Fund and celebrate the incredible efforts of their grantee partners working to tackle GBV and ensure girls can learn and thrive safely. Huge appreciation to the partners, Steering Committee members, and changemakers who are driving this work forward: Carron Mann, Dr. Ayesha Kareem, Meti T. Gemechu, Tamilore Omojola, Jean-Ann Ndow, Mashal Hussain, and Inês Maria Gon?alves, and Gayathri Butler for kick starting this incredible project. There’s more to come from the consultation - stay tuned! Together, we can build a future where every girl feels safe and empowered to achieve her vision. #GirlsVision #16Days #EndGBV #EducationForAll
November 25 kicks off #16DaysofActivism against gender-based violence (GBV), an annual campaign that organisations use to raise awareness on the issue. Women and girls are subject to GBV at shockingly high rates: globally, close to?one in three women?have experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. And this figure does not capture the experiences of girls under 15 and does not include all forms of GBV, including non-partner harassment. In Malala Fund's recent consultation with nearly 800 girls from 30 countries, girls revealed that a major barrier they face to learning is experiencing violence on the way to and in school. In the Girls’ Vision for Education consultation, girls told us how they dream of an education that enables them to take control of their futures, become leaders, get jobs they want, and help their families and other girls. But none of this is possible when girls have to go to school beneath a shadow of fear. This #16DaysofActivism Malala Fund is sharing some GBV insights from the consultation and celebrating the incredible work of our grantee partners to address GBV and support girls. More to come from the Consultation! Shout outs to all the girls who shared with us, the partners, Steering Committee members and Dr. Ayesha Kareem Meti T. In Tanzania, lack of support and enforced policies to protect girls?make it difficult for young mothers to return to the classroom. Tanzania Education Network/Mtandao wa Elimu Tanzania (TEN/MeT), a network of 140 NGOs across Tanzania, is working to change that. With their Malala Fund grant, their team works to improve perception of girls’ education, especially for pregnant girls and young mothers through community-led awareness campaigns and advocate for policies that increase the minimum marriage age and grant young mothers the right to re-enter formal education.
