I just read a hilarious article by an M&A specialist on how industry outsiders perceive niche firms, and it got me thinking! Turns out, our B2B approach to creative production can look pretty strange to the uninitiated. From our “unique” take on client relationships to our hyper-specific company culture, here’s a peek at how we might look from the outside. As a Director repped by The Magus Films, as streamlined as a production company can get, I’ve seen firsthand how valuable fresh perspectives can be.? What insights can we extract from how others see us? Here are some standouts: 1?? Client Relationships Without Agencies: Direct relationships mean we don’t need to spend on expensive RFP pitches or play guessing games to secure contracts. Instead, we put all our energy into meaningful partnerships and long-term results for clients who truly want our expertise. 2?? Marketing Through Referrals, Not Funnels: The idea that referrals and a strong reputation could be risky might surprise someone outside the industry, but for small production companies, it’s a game-changer. By delivering work that speaks for itself, we’re proving the value of quality over quantity and avoiding traditional marketing costs. 3?? Efficiency & Focus Over Fancy Titles: At our size, everyone plays multiple roles—but without the corporate title inflation. This keeps us nimble, budget-friendly, and focused on creating rather than managing. (Founder/President/CEO? Sure, but we’d rather just be the “producers,” “directors,” “DOP,” and “editor.”) 4?? Authenticity Speaks Louder Than “Buzzwords”: “Storytelling” and “positioning” are valuable, but overusing these words will dilute their impact. We make our own jargon: alchemy, spellbinding, magic! But we never compromise on clarity that our clients exactly what we do and how we can make a difference. 5?? Diversity Done Right: As a Latino-founded production company with years of experience working with Latino-owned and immigrant-owned businesses, we bring a deep level of cultural competency that goes beyond surface-level diversity. We understand the nuances of language, tradition, and perspective that are essential for genuinely connecting. This has felt especially meaningful in light of last week’s election results, which have once again underscored the importance of authentic representation. When we create content, we’re not just following trends; we’re drawing from lived experiences and cultural insight to tell stories that are genuine and real. For anyone in a small B2B production company, this “outsider perspective” is a great reminder: stay grounded, stay nimble, and don’t be afraid to skip the middleman.
